As to the drug issue am I guessing right in assuming laudanum is the drug of choice, I did find the story of Lizzie Siddal wife of Rossetti fascinating, she died from a laudanum overdose, there is a fairly good biog of her called The Tragedy of a pre-raphaelite super model by Lucinda Hawksley who is I believe Charles Dickens great great grand daughter.
Enjoyed your review and will now be looking out for a copy of Silas.Sharonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17824748902803492123noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7521348297206014365.post-59033033415690434792012-02-26T16:11:08.752-06:002012-02-26T16:11:08.752-06:00So glad you were able to read this wonderful novel...So glad you were able to read this wonderful novel--every time I read it I enjoy it more. The conversations in the pub really are wonderfully done, and show Eliot's incredible skill at realistic dialogue.

I haven't yet tried a digital audiobook from my library, but I will. I love audiobooks, and prefer them on my iPhone to dealing w CDs.JaneGShttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11094501834387622997noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7521348297206014365.post-80672812428631889602012-02-26T07:45:21.838-06:002012-02-26T07:45:21.838-06:00I love her books, but I was always afraid to pick ...I love her books, but I was always afraid to pick this one up.Misfithttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05791628901417307647noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7521348297206014365.post-69425291314750176372012-02-26T07:43:15.789-06:002012-02-26T07:43:15.789-06:00I'm so glad you liked this one!
