The Water Keeper by Charles Martin

The Water Keeper was the September selection for the Rogue (FLICKS) Book Club after we won the book from the TLC Book club giveaway.  We had our meeting the last week of September.

Murphy Shepherd has recently lost his mentor and has a quest to bring his ashes to where they met.  He is a secretive man that helps those in peril.  He meets a mother that has lost her daughter to a shadowy crew that traffics young girls on yachts around Florida.  Summer wants to find her daughter April and Murphy is determined to help her.  He also meets a faithful Labrador Retriever, an ex-con named Clay, and a mysterious girl named Ellie.  Will Murphy be able to reunite mother and daughter?  What is Murphy’s past?

We all agreed that this book was hard to get into as the beginning was confusing.  Once you got into the story it was engaging.  The one complaint was that there were too many threads of the story going on – it could have just focused on the main story.  For myself once I realized it was an action-adventure story, I could suspend my disbelieve and enjoy the ride.  I enjoyed the book and do want to see how the story continues in book two.  It was also distressing to learn more about human trafficking and to think about this happening to young girls.

Overall, The Water Keeper is an action-adventure story with unique twists.
