Regency Therapy by Lisa H. Catmull (Austenprose PR Book Tour)

Have you ever wanted to stay at a literary based resort?  Austenland the book and movie has made me want to visit such a place for fun.  Matchmaking Therapy and Regency Therapy have furthered my dreams of visiting such a place.

Matchmaking Therapy is a quick novella that sets up the premise of the Hartfield Regency Resort in Loveland, Colorado. Britni has just played her dream role of Emma in a play at college and can’t wait to move to New York City for the summer with her boyfriend Kirk.  She is shocked to discover that Kirk is engaged to her nemesis behind her back.  Not wanting to be embarrassed in front of everyone at the after party by this announcement, she makes an announcement of her own that she is making her own Regency based resort in Colorado.   Kirk tries to call her bluff by saying they will all visit her there in a week for a party.  Her father wants to make this happen and helps her to get an estate.  Unfortunately, it is occupied by a man named Axel and she can only lease it from him.  Sparks fly between the two and as Britni starts to staff the resort, we have the perfect set-up for the first full length book in the Jane Austen Vacation Club series), Regency Therapy.

In Regency Therapy, Lucy is a regency romance author who has been sent by her publisher to the Hartfield Regency Resort in Loveland, Colorado by her publisher.  On the way there, she meets a sexy Cowboy named Ryder on an airplane. She unwittingly makes fun of the book he has written, and then finds out he is her nemesis.  They both have the same publisher, and their books are always released the same week.  Ryder’s always sell better.  Ryder believes he is on the way to a Ranch, but soon finds out that he is also going to the Hartfield Regency Resort.  The publisher wants the romance writers to learn about horses, etc. and write with more knowledge on the subject.  She wants the western authors to learn more about romance.  Will Lucy and Ryder be able to get over their own pride and prejudice?

I loved the rom com feel to both of these books.  The banter and mood of the novels was fun.  I laughed out loud a few times.  I also enjoyed that they were sweet, clean romances.  I loved how Regency Therapy was a modern-day Pride and Prejudice story.  I am looking forward to the rest of the books in this series!

BOOK DESCRIPTION

My publisher invited me to attend an all-expenses paid writing retreat at the posh new Hartfield Regency Resort in Loveland, Colorado. Carole isn't nice like that—there must be a catch.

There is. His name is Ryder Hawk, the outlaw leader of the all-male Western writers who work for the same publishing company. He thinks he’s agreed to attend an all-expenses-paid week at a dude ranch.

Yeah, no. Carole has other ideas. She wants to break into the cowboy romance market. If I want to renew my writing contract, I have to do more than put up with Ryder and his gang of cowboy cronies for a week. We have to write together.

The problem is, Ryder and I have a history.

And it’s more like war than peace.

The Twits by Roald Dahl

What is your favorite Roald Dahl story, book, or movie?  I never read or watched anything by Roald Dahl until I was an adult.  Charlie and the Chocolate Family was a delight that I didn’t discover until I was an adult.

For our April Rogue Book Club selection, The Twits by Roald Dahl was chosen as Dahl has been a recent source of controversy surrounding the edits to his classic works.  I thought I had not read The Twits before, but as I got into it, I realized that I had listened to it on audiobook with my kids when they were younger.  I love the dark humor of Roald Dahl as do my kids.  My son Daniel has his complete collection so I borrowed The Twits from him to read.

I loved the pictures by Quentin Blake.  This is a short and simple story of a couple in town that no one likes because they are completely despicable.  The book is a series of stories of how Mr. Twit and Mrs. Twit play mean tricks on each other trying to one up each other.  They also keep caged monkeys, the Muggle-Wumps, that must stand on their heads all day.  The Muggle-Wumps plan a trick of their own to finally get even with the Twits.

We had a good discussion about the edits to Roald Dahl books and censoring books in general.  It seems a lot of it is that parents don’t want to sit down and read with their kids to see what they are reading and have discussions with them about what they are reading.  The changes that were made to this book in particular were puzzling.  The original text has Mrs. Twit walking with a cane because it is supposed she has warts on her feet and that cane is used to beat children and small animals.  The part about warts was taken out, but the cane for beating children and small animals was left in. What is the point?  I am in favor of leaving it the way the Roald Dahl originally wrote it.

This is a quick and humorous book.

The House is on Fire by Rachel Beanland

Title:  The House is on Fire

Author:  Rachel Beanland

Narrated by:  Joniece Abbott-Pratt, Andi Arndt, Michael Crouch, Ruffin Prentiss III

Publisher: Simon & Schuster Audio

Length: Approximately 12 hours and 28 minutes

Source: Review Copy from Simon & Schuster Audio.  Thank you @simonandschuster #BookClubFavorites for the free books!

Do you have any famous local fires in your area?  The Peshtigo Fire in Northeast Wisconsin was the same day as the Great Chicago Fire and it caused a much higher loss of life and property, but it was overshadowed by the Chicago Fire.  My sons were intrigued with it when they were little, and we read many accounts of the tragedy.  I had a hard time not crying reading the first-person accounts of horror as fathers ran back to save the family dog or a prize possession never to be seen again.

The House is on Fire is a historical fiction novel that is based on a famous fire and tragedy that occurred in Richmond Virginia on December 26, 1811.  A lot of people were in town for the general assembly and holidays and over six-hundred people packed the theatre when fire broke out.  The novel focuses on four different people who were involved with the event in very different ways.  Sally Henry Campbell is a widow and the daughter of Patriot Patrick Henry.  She is in a third story box when the fire breaks out.  Cecily Patterson is a slave that is attending with her mistress and sitting in the gallery.  Jack Gibson is a stagehand hoping to have a career in theatre who is at the epicenter when the blaze starts.  Gilbert Hunt is enslaved by a cruel blacksmith and dreams of purchasing freedom for himself and his wife.  All four of these individuals have to make decisions on that fateful night that that will change the course of their lives forever.  Just as important is the aftermath when people were searching for either the truth or for someone to blame for the tragedy.

This audiobook had four different narrators to go with the four different viewpoints of the novel.  It worked quite well and made it an enjoyable read with the four different perspectives of the fire.  I greatly enjoyed this audiobook.   The short chapters kept the momentum of the story going. The fire started at the beginning of the book and there was a lot of action that took place.   It really made me wonder, what would you do in such a situation?   I would like to think I would be a hero trying to save others, but I worry that I would be the person pushing my way out and walking on others just to survive.

I had never heard of this part of history before, and I enjoyed learning about a new to me piece of history.  I also appreciated that the four main characters came from very different backgrounds and that two of the characters were enslaved.  It was very interesting at the end of the novel to learn more about these real-life individuals in the author’s note.  I felt that through the characters that were written about, the reader was able to get a wide view of the tragedy through a lens that also showed the rampant racism and sexism of the time.  Cecily suffered great horrors as an enslaved women, but the theatre fire gave her a chance to start over.  Gilbert was the hero of the day in public, but abused by his master in private.  Orphan Jack struggles with speaking the truth when he may lose his job and opportunities.  Sally wonders at a world that doesn’t give a voice to women and their experiences and wonders about the men who left her to die in the blaze.  It was intriguing to think about so many aspects to the story and life in 1811.

The Magnolia Palace by Fiona Davis

What is your favorite museum to visit?  My family loves visiting museums . . . except for my 12-year-old daughter.  She loves living history museums, but not regular museums.  I don’t know if I have one favorite museum as I love learning from all of them.  I have always enjoyed visiting the Kalamazoo Air Zoo with my Dad as I love aviation history.  Visiting the various Little House on the Prairie museums in Minnesota and South Dakota was a thrill.

The Magnolia Palace by Fiona Davis was the April pick for the Page-turners Book Club at the Kewaunee Public Library.  We had a great discussion about it last week.

The Magnolia Palace is a dual narrative historical fiction novel.  In 1919, Lillian Carter is at a crossroads in life.  She is only twenty-one, but she is washed up as the most famous “super model” of the day.  In her teens she had posed for many artists and her sculptures are all over Manhattan.  Now after her manager mother’s death, she is having a hard time getting a job.  When she gets mistakenly wrapped up in her landlord’s murder of his wife, she decides it’s time to try something new.  She goes undercover and becomes the private secretary to Helen Frick, the daughter of the very rich Henry Clay Frick.  His dream is to leave his mansion as an art museum when he dies.  Will Lillian’s past come back to haunt her?

In the 1960’s, Veronica Weber is a model in a photo shoot at the Frick Museum.  When she is mistakenly locked in the museum during a snowstorm, she gets involved in a treasure hunt using clues that are tied to the famous paintings together with Joshua, a young curator and college student.    Will the clues help them to unravel one of the biggest mysteries at the museum?

I greatly enjoyed this novel.  I really liked the mystery and how it was unraveled with both narratives in both timelines.  I also liked the look at how models were treated in 1919 compared to the 1960s.  Lillian was intriguing, and I was even more intrigued in the afterword and through videos we watched at book club to learn more about the tragic real-life figure she was based on.  Helen Frick was very interesting as well.  I was slightly distressed that she was written as an abrasive character.  Was she being written that was because she was a strong woman who accomplished a lot in life?  Then we learned more in book club, I realized how much research Fiona Davis had done to make sure she accurately captured her personality.  The Frick family had such a sad and tragic story.  It has made me really want to visit this museum in New York City.

Black Girls Must Have it All by Jayne Allen (Bibliolifestyle Book Tour)

Thank you, Partner @bibliolifestyle @harperperennial for the review copy of Black Girls Must Have it All by Jayne Allen.

Do you ever start a series in the middle or end or do you always start with the first book?

Black Girls Must Have it All is the third in a series of books.  I enjoyed this book, but I definitely want to go back and read the entire series.

SYNOPSIS:

In this final installment in the acclaimed Black Girls Must Die Exhausted trilogy, Tabitha is juggling work, relationships, and a newborn baby—but will she find the happy ending she’s always wanted?

After a whirlwind year, Tabitha Walker’s carefully organized plan to achieve the life she wanted—perfect job, dream husband, and stylish home—has gone off the rails. Her checklist now consists of diapers changed (infinite), showers taken (zero), tears cried (buckets), and hours of sleep (what’s that?).

Don't get her wrong, Tabby loves her new bundle of joy and motherhood is perhaps the only thing that's consistent for her these days. When the news station announces that they will be hiring outside competitors for the new anchor position, Tabby throws herself into her work. But it’s not just maintaining her position as the station’s weekend anchor that has her worried. All of her relationships seem to be shifting out of their regular orbits. Best friend Alexis can’t manage to strike the right balance in her “refurbished” marriage with Rob, and Laila’s gone from being a consistent ride-or-die to a newly minted entrepreneur trying to raise capital for her growing business. And when Marc presents her with an ultimatum about their relationship, coupled with an extended “visit” from his mother, Tabby is forced to take stock of her life and make a new plan for the future.

Consumed by work, motherhood, and love, Tabby finds herself isolated from her friends and family just when she needs them most. But help is always there when you ask for it, and Tabby’s village will once again rally around her as she comes to terms with her new life and faces her biggest challenge yet—choosing herself.

Publication Date:  April 11, 2023.

My thoughts:  While I am not a black woman, this book was so relatable for working women who are trying to get ahead both at work and struggle with having taking care of a newborn child.  My youngest is 12, but the descriptions of the all-consuming task of keeping your newborn alive and fed brought back a lot of memories.  Add to this the extra layer of being a black woman and this gave me a new perspective.  This is a character driven novel.  I loved getting to know Tabby, Marc and her friends Alexis and Laila.

The Moving Finger by Agatha Christie

Title:  The Moving Finger

Author:  Agatha Christie

Narrated by:  Richard E. Grant

Publisher: Harper Audio

Length: Approximately 6 hours and 23 minutes

Source: Checked out with Hoopla through the Kewaunee Public Library.  Thank-you!

Have you ever received a Poison Pen letter?  I luckily have not.  I wonder how common they are in this day and age.  Is Cyber Bullying the 21st century Poison Pen letter?

The Moving Finger was the March selection for #ReadChristie2023.  I finished it the morning of April 1st so I was one day late!!

Jerry is a wounded aviator from World War II and needs to recuperate.  Lymstock seems the perfect village to rehabilitate in with his sister, Joanna.  As they get to know people in the village, they receive a poison pen letter insinuating that they are not brother and sister.  Others in town also receive such letters.  They seem to spread gossip and spite but are not altogether accurate.  Mrs. Symmington is found dead after she received one such letter and it appears to be from suicide.  Was it suicide or murder?

I really enjoyed Jerry and Joanna and their personalities.   It really worked well having them as outsiders to the community.  Through them we are introduced to the characters and learn their quirks and history through their visit to the village. Jerry is the narrator for the novel and I enjoyed his perspective. Christie really threw me through a loop with this once as I thought that Mrs. Symington’s daughter (and Jerry’s love interest) Megan was guilty the entire time. I was so wrong, but I love how Christie tricks me every time.

This is called a Miss Marple mystery, but Miss Marple is hardly in this book.  I think the mystery could have been solved without her.

Richard E. Grant was a wonderful narrator.  This was a fun audiobook and an enjoyable listen.

Double or Nothing by Kim Sherwood (Bibliolifestyle Book Tour)

Thank you, Partner @bibliolifestyle @williammorrowbooks for the review copy of Double or Nothing by Kim Sherwood.

What is your favorite James Bond movie?  I love Sean Connery as James Bond, but some of the 1970’s films such as The Man with the Golden Gun are fun.  I love the campy humor.

Double or Nothing is definitely more in the vein of the modern James Bond movies.  I don’t want to spoil the plot of this one so I’m going to use the publisher’s synopsis to explain:

SYNOPSIS:

“I spy … a brilliant thriller! Double or Nothing is a clever and utterly compelling addition to the Bond canon.” —Jeffery Deaver, author of Carte Blanche, a James Bond novel

The start of a brand-new trilogy following MI6’s Double O agents with a license to kill, that blows the world of James Bond wide open!

James Bond is missing…

007 has been captured—and perhaps killed—by a sinister private military company. His status unknown. MI6 holds out hope that their most lethal agent will find his way home. But in the meantime, the rest of the Double O division has a job to do.

Meet the new generation of spies…

Johanna Harwood, 003. Joseph Dryden, 004. Sid Bashir, 009. They represent the very best and brightest of MI6. Supremely skilled, ruthless, with a license to kill, they will do anything to protect their country.

The fate of the world rests in their hands…

Tech billionaire Sir Bertram Paradise claims he has developed new cutting-edge technology capable of reversing climate change and saving the planet. But can his grandiose promises be trusted, and are his motives as altruistic as they appear? The new spies must uncover the truth because the stakes could not be higher; for humanity… and for James Bond himself.

Time is running out.

My review:

While I am a fan of the James Bond movies, this is the first novel I have read in the James Bond universe.  He is not a character in this book, but the three double Os are searching for him. This book was action packed and a thrilling story.  I liked that the story did have climate change in it.  The book definitely was trying to diversify the James Bond world.  New characters were introduced while old characters such as Moneypenny reappeared.  Q is now a supercomputer which was an interesting twist.  The book ended on a cliff hanger, and I do want to read what happens next.

I did have a hard time getting into this novel.  The different viewpoints made the story disjointed.

This book was published on April 11, 2023.

Peter Rabbit and Other Stories by Beatrix Potter, Narrated by Alison Larkin

Title:  Peter Rabbit & Other Stories

Author:  Beatrix Potter

Narrated by:  Alison Larkin

Publisher: Alison Larkin Presents

Length: Approximately 3 hours and 46 minutes

Source: Review Copy from Alison Larkin Presents.  Thank-you!

Do you have a favorite Beatrix Potter story?

I used to read and love a treasury of Beatrix Potter stories as a child.  It was given to me by my beloved Great Grandparents.  I was excited to listen to this collection of stories again the week before Easter and I also enjoyed thumbing through my old copy and looking at the beautiful illustrations as well.  My husband and I read the tales of Peter Rabbit and Benjamin Bunny with our kids, but I had forgotten a lot of the other stories.

The stories included with this collection included:

he Tale of Peter Rabbi"

"The Tailor of Gloucester"

"The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin"

"The Tale of Benjamin Bunny"

"The Tale of Two Bad Mice"

"The Tale of Mrs Tiggywinkle"

"The Pie and the Patty-Pan"

"The Tale of Mr Jeremy Fisher"

"The Story of a Fierce Bad Rabbit"

"The Story of Miss Moppet"

"The Tale of Tom Kitten"

"The Tale of Jeminia Puddle-duck"

"The Roly-Poly Pudding"

"The Tale of the Flopsy Bunnies"

"The Tale of Mrs Tittlemouse"

"The Tale of Timmy Tiptoes"

"The Tale of Mr Tod"

"The Tale of Pigling Bland"

"Alison Larkin interviews Peter Rabbit"

"The Owl and the Pussycat" by Edward Lear

I enjoyed the entertaining interview with Peter Rabbit at the end.  I also loved the “Tale of the Flopsy Bunnies” and “The Tale of Mr. Tod”.  I didn’t remember that Peter Rabbit’s sister Flopsy marries Benjamin Bunny.  Of course, their children get into many scrapes.  The stories were fun and delightful.

It did make me laugh wondering if Peter Rabbit will be banned next after the beginning of the story has Peter’s father’s demise by Mr. McGregor and becoming his supper.  There are other items like that through the story.  I looked it up and Peter Rabbit was banned in England in the 1980s because the characters were too middle classed.  It was also banned in China because the animals were wearing clothes and acting like humans.

Alison Larkin is my favorite audiobook narrator.  She was a delight to listen to narrating this audiobook.

The Scandalous Ladies of London: The Countess by Sophie Jordan (Bibliolifestyle Book Tour)

Thank you, Partner @bibliolifestyle @avonbooks for the review copy of The Scandalous Ladies of London:  The Countess by Sophie Jordan.

Do you like to read or watch scandalous stories?  Scandalous stories always make me think about soap operas.  My family were die hard Young and the Restless fans while I was growing up.  I loved that show and all of the scandalous storylines.  Sadly after I got out of college and went to work, I stopped watching it.

Lady Gertrude married a man that her parents approved of and thought she would have a happy marriage.  Unfortunately the Earl of Chatham was never a considerate lover and spent his time with his many mistresses and one night stands rather than with his wife.  Now twenty years into their marriage, they live completely separate lives.  Her daughter, Delia, has now come out into society and Lady Gertrude “Tru” hopes that she will be able to make a love match.  Her husband has other ideas and hopes that she can marry a rich suitor that can support his gambling addiction.  Tru meets a mysterious man at an event and feels an immediate attraction for the first time in her life.  She is horrified to learn that this man, Jasper Thorne, is the man that her husband has decided will marry her daughter.  Tru and Jasper are close in age and have an undeniable attraction.  Attraction to her daughter’s suitor is unacceptable.  What will Tru, Jasper, and Delia do to find their own happiness?

I enjoyed this story and was indeed scandalized by this plot.  I thought it was funny though showing the age differences in courting couples.  It was okay for a thirty-something man to be trying to marry an 18 year old whose mother is also in her thirties.  Tru is 37 and Jasper is 33. It was interesting to have the woman be older in the relationship.

This book had fake dating, lust at first sight, and forbidden love.

I would call the steam level of this book medium.  There was a lot of buildup, but it was mostly closed door.

Tru had an entire group of friends who played a part in the story.  We saw pieces of their lives and stories too and I’m sure they will be the focus of future books in this series.  The Duchess of Dedham is the focus of the next book, and we get a sneak peek at the end of this book.  This book was told through multiple point of views including Tru, Jasper, and some of her friends.

Lord Chatham is a very one-dimensional villain.  It was hard to understand why Tru and her parents were fooled by him before she was married.  Jasper at times put me off when he tried to come-on to Tru before he knew who she was . . . but he did know he was going to be courting Delia.  I was disturbed that he was okay with having a mistress while courting another to be his wife.

Overall, this was an enjoyable regency romance with delightful older (thirty something) main characters.

The Scandalous Ladies of London:  The Countess by Sophie Jordan was published on March 28, 2023.

On the Line by Fern Michaels (Bibliolifestyle Book Tour)

Thank you, Partner @bibliolifestyle @kensingtonbooks for the review copy of On the Line by Fern Michaels.

What type of book do you like to bring on vacation? We just returned from our mini-vacation tonight. On the Line by Fern Michaels was a great book to bring with me to read while on vacation. It was a quick read that that kept me involved in the plot. For me this was perfect water park reading.

Mateo Castillo is a rising chef working New York City. Just as he is about to be featured in a major cooking competition, he is found collapsed and bleeding out in his kitchen. His blood has elevated levels of mercury. He is told by hist attractive doctor to abstain from eating fish to recover. Yet, three weeks later he collapses again and finds himself back in the ER. What is happening to him? What secrets are his parents trying to keep when he calls them to obtain his medical history?

Mateo’s mystery really frames or bookends the main story which is the story of his parents Elena and Dante and grandparents, Gabriel and Sophia and their flight from Columbia. Gabriel and Sophia own a family bakery in the 1980s. Dante is a salsa instructor to make extra money while he attends college to become an engineer. Elena is also attending college to teach English as a second language. An incident of violence changes their world and forces them to flee their country. Will they be able to still accomplish their dreams? What has this to do with Mateo?

I like this action driven plot and I really enjoyed the journey. I also liked the underlying message of gratitude. It’s kind of hard to categorize this story. It’s a family drama with light romance, a daring escape, and a medical mystery all in one. I really enjoyed the story of this family.

When Tomorrow Came by Hannah Lindor (Austenprose PR Book Tour)

What would you like tomorrow to bring to you?  I would love some warm weather please!

Heath and Nan are two siblings that were left with a terrible guardian when their father goes to sea.   As they are slowly starving to death, they decide to fend for themselves on the streets of London.  After Nan is involved in a carriage accident, she gets the chance to live a better life raised by a guardian.  Meanwhile Heath is raised by a wonderful Rector who gives him a home and a love for God.  When tomorrow comes and their father returns, he reunites the siblings.  What should have been a happy occasion turns sour when their father has great expectations for them that do not match their own wants and desires.  Will Heath and Nan be able to find their own happily ever after?

I loved Hannah Lindor’s first book, Beneath His Silence, and was greatly looking forward to her new book, When Tomorrow Came.  I was not disappointed and greatly enjoyed this book.  I really liked the characters.  I just loved Heath and the love for his sister.  It was heartbreaking at the start of the novel when the two were separated.  I also enjoyed how he had a kinder gentler approach to what he wanted to do with life.

I also enjoyed the romance between the two primary couples in this book.  I also really enjoyed the mystery and suspense in this novel and it kept me hooked to the end wondering what was going to happen.  I loved the theme of sacrifice in this novel.

The only downfall of this book to me is that when the point of view switched around, I didn’t realize it at first until a name was mentioned.  It made the story seem slightly disjointed to me.

Overall, When Tomorrow Came is a great romantic suspense novel and I highly recommend it!
