Four Weddings and a Christmas by Phillipa Ashley

Do you have “go to” authors that you read when you are looking for a certain type of story?  Phillipa Ashley is one of my “go to” authors that I go to for Christmas and summer reads that I know will both be a good story and have great characters.

Freya has a history of being a runaway bride.  In grade school she ran away from a pretend wedding to young Travis, and as an eighteen-year-old, she also ran away from an engagement to the same Travis.  Now years later, Freya has a successful business preparing vacation homes for people in England’s Lake District.  She recently ended an engagement with a dependable boyfriend and has started to believe that she may never find love.  Travis returns to town this Christmas season.  He is now a famous wildlife photographer, and he has returned to start his own store and photography business in town.  He also wants to spend more time with his family.  The last thing he expects is to run back into Freya and immediately have the same old feelings for her again.  Freya does not want to get into a relationship again as she seems to have no luck with them.  Will Freya and Travis be able to figure out their future?

I loved Freya and Travis, but also all the other characters in this novel.  Phillipa Ashley writes wonderful characters.  I also liked how Freya and Travis both had troubling aspects of their childhood that have carried over into their adult relationships.  Being able to understand the past helps them both to move on into the future.  Their family situations were important and solving some of those problems added a greater depth to the story.  Freya and Travis also had great chemistry.  They had a friends-to-lovers and a second chance romance story, both tropes that I enjoy.

I also loved the Lake District.  It sounded beautiful and I loved the small-town feel.  Everyone knew each other and helped each other out.  The Christmas spirit was in the story.  I loved this story from start to finish and it was the perfect story to be reading at Christmas.  It was one of my favorite books this Christmas season.

A Surprise Christmas Wedding by Phillipa Ashley

I enjoy Phillipa Ashley’s novels.  She writes great character driven stories set in England that are typically filled with family drama.  I read a Christmas novel by her last year and knew I needed to read once again this year.  Ashley did not disappoint with another great Christmas novel.

Last year at Christmas, Lottie became engaged to her boyfriend Conner after he swept her off her feet on a Cornwall vacation.  Unfortunately, back at home, Conner got cold feet and broke off the engagement.  Lottie didn’t have time to fully morn that loss as she discovered her sister, Steph, had cervical cancer and needed her help caring for her two daughters.  Lottie accepted a new job at a Lake District grand estate, Firholme, as an event planner.  Her first big event is a surprise Christmas wedding for Conner and his new fiancĂ©e.  Lottie has to get over the shock and get this event planned for this estate to be successful.  Will she be able to move on from her feelings for Conner?  Will she be able to move on with handsome estate groundskeeper, Jay?  What is the mystery behind Jay’s sadness?

I enjoyed all of the characters in this novel and the planning of a Christmas wedding.  I also liked how the book dove into love and loss at the holidays and how to move on from that sadness to celebrate the season again.  If you are estranged from your family – how can you go back?  I really enjoyed the side characters as well.  I really want Steph to have her own spin off novel.  It’s set up well for a good one.  It was a good romance and story.

 Favorite Quotes:

“It’s easy to think everyone’s having an amazing time, surrounded by family.  The truth is that almost everyone is struggling with something:  bad memories, the tensions simmering.”

“No matter what had happened, he loved them.  He always had even if that love had laid buried under and avalanche of disappointment and bitterness.”

Overall, A Surprise Christmas Wedding is a delightful romance set in the Lake District of England that is filled with great characters and rumination on how to get back on your feet after a great heart break.

A Perfect Cornish Christmas by Phillipa Ashley

It was the perfect Cornish Christmas, when Scarlett and her sister Ellie decide to surprise their family with the results of a DNA test. Their father has always wanted to know if they have Viking Blood.  Only to everyone’s surprise, the results show that Scarlett and Ellie are half-sisters - a result that tears their family apart.

Scarlett decides to move into the family estate (left to their Mom by a beloved famous romance author aunt) in Porthmellow Cornwall with her sister Ellie.  The two sisters find romance.  Will their family be able to move on and have a Merry Christmas?

I found this novel to be quite enjoyable.  I loved the setting and the characters.  The storyline actually reminded me of watching The Young and Restless with my Grandma as a kid.  I loved it.  It kept me guessing on the twists and turns it took – I was surprised at the end!

Overall, A Perfect Cornish Christmas was a riveting Contemporary Christmas novel with just the right amount of romance.

Just Say Yes by Phillipa Ashley

Lucy Gibson meets her new boyfriend Nick at a Bagel deli. Their romance moves along quickly, with not much time together as Nick is involved in “Hot Shots!” an Apprentice type TV series where he is competing to be able to start his own business. When Nick asks Lucy the ultimate question on live TV, she answers the one way that TV audiences will not appreciate. Now hounded by the press, Lucy travels to Cornwall to get some much needed time away and to reevaluate her life.

I enjoy Phillipa Ashley’s novels. The characters are great, and I love the romance. I enjoyed the setting in Cornwall for this novel, and the mention of one of my favorite foods, “Pasties.” Cornish miners brought them to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan when they mined the Copper Mines in the 1800’s. I attended college in the “U.P.” and grew to love them. Luckily the frozen type is available from the north in my local grocery so I am able to enjoy them still. I wanted to vacation in one of the cottages by the coast in Cornwall described in the book and eat a real Cornish pasty. As with Ashley’s other novels, I didn’t want it to end and wish that I could enjoy the characters again in another novel.

Overall, if you are looking for a great beach read this summer, I recommend Just Say Yes!

Carrie Goes Off the Map by Phillipa Ashley

Carrie Goes Off the Map is a very enjoyable road trip novel through England. Carrie is two weeks away from marrying her long-time boyfriend Huw, when he drops a bombshell; he is breaking up with her. Carrie had put aside her own dreams of becoming an actress for Huw and had spent the years since graduating from college helping Huw run his family dairy farm.

Suddenly, without a purpose in life, Carrie moves in with her friend Rowena and tries to determine what her next move will be. Rowena tries to cheer Carrie up by planning a European road trip in a vintage VW camper named Dolly. Unfortunately, Rowena is unable to go at the last minute and has found a new companion for Carrie, the handsome Dr. Matt Landor.

Matt is back from his work in Tuman after an unfortunate accident. Commanded to take four months off to rest and get himself back together, he is not sure what he is going to do with his time off. Matt was friends with Huw back at the University, and after meeting Carrie again at a bad moment (it’s a classic moment in the book, I don’t want to ruin it for those who haven’t read it yet!) he is officially intrigued. Together they go on a tour of Southern England and learn how to move on with life. And also learn more about each other.

I really enjoyed this book. At one point, a barber cuts Matt’s hair and says that he looks like a modern Mr. Darcy. There were indeed elements of that classic story in this book with Carrie and Matt meeting again after so many years and having a misunderstanding that sets the two at odds at first. Carrie was much more against Matt than he is against her. Their delightful friction kept me entranced throughout the book.

I also loved the description of the road trip in the campervan. It sounded like a lot of fun. Phillipa Ashley wrote a great guest post for this blog describing her travels in a campervan as part of the research process for this novel. The post is intriguing and if you leave a comment by midnight tonight, you have a chance to win a copy of this great book!

I also really liked an odd thing too, that Huw was a dairy farmer. The descriptions of the mega farm and life on the farm reminded me a lot of life around Wisconsin, aka Dairyland USA. It made me realize that things really are not that different between the United States and England. It was funny that Huw was considered quite a catch as he was a rich farmer, which is the same as some of the farmers in my county who are millionaires. Family farms are not the same as they used to be anywhere anymore it seems.

Overall, I found Carrie Goes Off the Map to be a delightful book with great characters, romance, and a wonderful journey. Phillipa Ashley has become one of my new favorite contemporary romance authors.

From Road Trip to Fiction: Writing Carrie Goes Off the Map by Phillipa Ashley (and GIVEAWAY!)

I am happy to have author Phillipa Ashley as a guest on Laura's Reviews today talking about her new novel, Carrie Goes Off the Map. I posed the following question to Ms. Ashley and got a very entertaining guest blog response.

From road trip to fiction, what about your research trip made it into the book and what was left behind?

I think the old ’iceberg rule’ holds true. You only really use a tiny fraction of the research you’ve done in the finished book. Even with a contemporary novel, it’s very easy to get carried away with dumping knowledge into scenes and that holds up the pace of the story for the reader.

On saying that, my road trip in South West England in a vintage VW campervan trip did made a big difference to the book, both in terms of atmosphere and plot. I’m convinced that if I hadn’t actually sampled such a journey myself, the book would not be the one it is now.

I’d actually started the draft before I went on the trip and had a good grip on the characters and an idea of where the plot was heading, but I knew it would be so much better and more fun to actually experience the campervan lifestyle.

VW campervans have iconic status in the UK. You see them rattling down the motorway, adorned with bright colours and surfboards on the roof, heading for the beaches of Devon and Cornwall. I chose a VW van for Carrie’s journey because it was quirky and individual, like the characters. The van also seemed the perfect vehicle for bringing Carrie up close and personal with her own emotions, challenges and goals in life - and of course, with the gorgeous but infuriating Dr Matt Landor.

I’d been camping with my husband as a student, but this trip was to be the first time we’d stayed in such a small vehicle without technology, home comforts or a bathroom. Not a problem, I thought, I can rough it and camping out under the stars always looks so idyllic...

There was only once slight concern. Carrie and Matt travel in high summer but we needed to take the trip in March!

In early spring, the UK can be reasonably mild, with daffodils are in bloom and lambs in the fields but it can just as well bring thick snow, gales and lashing rain! Plus we were heading for the north coast of Devon, to a stunning campsite that was exposed to the full force of nature. In the end it was fine every day – but boy, was it cold. We definitely had to snuggle up to keep warm, with only the canvas roof between us and the elements.

I thought carefully about Carrie’s itinerary because it had to reflect her emotional journey after she loses everything – her fiancĂ©, her job, her home, self esteem and belief in happy endings. So she starts off by throwing away her engagement ring, feeling bitter and cynical and with no real sense of direction.

In our five day trip, there wasn’t time to do the whole route that Matt and Carrie take, but I had already been to the other main novel locations including St Ives, an old fishing village in Cornwall and the Minack Theatre, an amazing open air amphitheatre carved out of the cliffs. I used North Devon, where we took the campervan, the first place that Carrie and Matt stop. It’s a big surfers’ hang out as you’ll find out from the novel.

Other experiences made it into the book. What a shock it was to take wheel of a 40 year old van! The driving made for some fun scenes and actually provided the idea for a major turning point in the novel. The cramped conditions were ‘interesting’ and I realised the van didn’t have physical space for one scene I had in mind... as you’ll read.

I also learned a valuable lesson: never let research take precedence over the characters. I had planned to have a rescue at sea in the book and so I arranged a visit to an RAF Search & Rescue base in Devon. The visit was thrilling, we saw the SAR helicopter landing and I got to sit in the pilot’s seat and interview one of the crew. But when I’d finished the draft I realised the scene didn’t really fit in, no mater how much I wanted it there, so I deleted it. It stung to cut out all those words and rewrite but I'm so glad I did.

The story always comes first and I can always save that research for a new book!

Wish You Were Here by Phillipa Ashley

Wish You Were Here is a modern day tale of Persuasion with the thrill of a vacation travel adventure. Eight years ago, Beth Allen met and fell in love with Jack Thornfield while they were both on a vacation trekking through the island of Corsica. After a whirlwind romance and an engagement, Beth never heard from Jack again, breaking her heart. Now all of these years later, Beth discovers that Jack is head of the company where she is desperately trying to get a job. While Beth hates Jack for his abandonment in the past, old attractions start to stir up again when the two meet again.

I really enjoyed Wish You Were Here. I thought it had the perfect blend of romance, exotic vacation travel, and a bit of mystery (why did Jack leave Beth eight years ago?). I sped through the book wanting to know how it ended and it certainly did not disappoint. In fact, it was the perfect book (and quick read) with a great story and great ending. I loved the characters of Jack and Beth, and really felt for the both of them.

Wish You Were Here reminded me of my favorite Jane Austen novel, Persuasion. While neither Jack nor Beth were necessarily persuaded to abandon each other (or were they? You’ll have to read the novel to find out), it was still a story of two young people who impetuously fell in love, only to be separated and reunited eight years later. Although much has happened in the meantime, the two can’t deny that they still have feeling for one other. Will they let their feelings guide them to each other, or to their current boyfriend/girlfriend? You’ll have to read it to find out!

I enjoy that Phillipa Ashley’s novels always have a bit of adventure in them. I liked Dating Mr. December and the rescue squad. I enjoyed that Jack and Beth word for a travel adventure company and like to travel around the world. It gives the novel a unique premise as well as an exotic flair.

Overall, Wish You Were Here is a great fun read whether you are on the beach, backpacking through an exotic land, or sitting at home on your couch.

Phillipa Ashley wrote a fantastic guest post for this blog about her favorite vacation movie. Check it out and leave a comment for a chance to win a copy of Wish You Were Here.

Favorite Holiday Romance Movies by Phillipa Ashley (and GIVEAWAY!)

I love holiday romance movies – or should I call them vacation romance movies?
When Laura asked me if I had any favourites, I did a quick poll of my readers and Facebook friends and got some surprising answers. Some of the most popular were Roman Holiday, The Notebook, The Holiday, Grease, Letters to Juliet and Shirley Valentine. Other candidates were Three Coins in the Fountain, French Kiss, Mamma Mia – not all vacation romance films, strictly speaking and I haven’t seen all of them, but I do now have a new To Be Watched list!

My number one holiday romance movie has to be Dirty Dancing. Yes, it’s a classic dance movie but it’s also about a vacation romance between the innocent, idealistic Baby and worldly wise, experienced Johnny. I love this film and have watched it over and over again. Of course it’s a great fun movie and the music and dance scenes are classics. But I think the deeper themes about growing up and not judging people by first impressions, resonate too. Johnny teaches Baby about the realities of life, but she also teaches him about standing up for what you believe in.

I’ll admit to needing a tissue at several moments; especially when Baby stands up to her father. These days, I always want to cry at the uplifting ending, especially since the late great Patrick Swayze is no longer with us.

I got the idea for my own holiday romance book, Wish You Were Here, from a trip to the stunning French island of Corsica. Before the books starts, the heroine, Beth Allen meets Jack Thornfield on a hiking trip. As leader of her tour, Jack seems strong, tender and capable – and he’s also totally gorgeous! Beth falls madly in love with him and is convinced he feels the same. They part, having vowed to stay together forever but then Beth gets home to England and the harsh reality of life. She never hears from Jack again and although she’s devastated, she has to move on.

Wish You Were Here opens eight years after that trip. Since then, Beth has lost her mother to cancer, her father is recovering from a serious accident and her younger sister needs money to take up a place at college. Beth needs a job fast and is thrilled to land an interview for a dream position at a London travel company.

But she’s in for a shock when she finds out who her new CEO is...

Do you have any favourite holiday romance movies or novels? Or do you have a vacation romance story of your own?

Thank-you Phillipa Ashley for the great guest blog! There is nothing I like better than a good holiday romance movie, unless it is a good holiday romance book like Wish You Were Here! Stay tuned for my review of Wish You Were Here which will appear on my blog next week.

Phillipa Ashley Interview (and GIVEAWAY!), Author of Dating Mr. December

I recently read, reviewed, and enjoyed Phillipa Ashley's Dating Mr. December. I am very excited that Phillipa Ashley is on Laura's Reviews today to answer all of my questions I had while reading the novel. I have my DVR set to record the 12 Men of Christmas this weekend (the movie based on the novel) and I can't wait to see it!

LAG: What was your inspiration for Dating Mr. December?
PA: I’ve always been an admirer of mountain rescue teams and this book gave me a chance to chat up our local team and ask if they’d mind getting their kit off! Seriously, I did tour a base (literally about 5 mins walk from our apartment - see below.) The team had to raise lots of money to build it and that’s how the idea came about.

LAG: Forgive my ignorance of England, I know the Lake District exists and I loved it as the setting for Dating Mr. December. Do you live near the Lake District? Why did you choose it as the setting?
PA: Well done on even knowing the place exists, Laura, because it’s a very small region of England. We have a holiday apartment in the Lake District which we also rent out. Whenever we arrive, something just clicks in me and I instantly relax and feel inspired. The natural beauty, the changing weather moods, the literary associations and the tight-knit community all strongly appeal to me.

LAG: Will Tennant is a very athletic man. Do you do any of the climbing or bungee jumping that he so enjoys?
PA: I did abseil (rappel) off a small (50ft) cliff for one of the scenes because the editor had suggested I could make more of Emma’s fear of heights. It made the scene stronger but I would never do it again and as for bungee jumping or climbing – no way! However, I do love hiking in the mountains. When went to see the movie set, we walked some trails in the Rockies – terrified in case we saw a bear or a cougar!

LAG: Have you seen the movie, 12 Men of Christmas, based on your novel? How do you think it transferred to the television medium?
PA: I’ve seen it many times. When it was optioned, a writer friend said it was very filmable because there are lots of action and conflict and a strong sense of place. The men are a dream for a movie too, of course, although they are more obviously hunky and handsome in the movie than in my book. No complaints there! However, there are big differences, not least being my book is set in Britain rather than the USA. I also think that the screenwriter made more of the comedy aspects, whereas in Dating Mr. December the romantic relationship drives the story and you learn a lot more about the character’s motivations – particularly Will’s back story. And my book is much, much sexier than the film!

LAG: What other novels do you have coming out in the U.S.? You write a great romance novel!
PA: Thank you! I’ve been genuinely delighted with the response to the book and the warm welcome I’ve got from the US romance community – you’re very passionate about the genre here. Sourcebooks are publishing another three of my novels. The next one is Wish You Were Here, released in summer 2011.

Dating Mr. December by Phillipa Ashley

If you are looking for a hot romance to warm up your winter evenings, Dating Mr. December is the book for you. Previously published in the U.K., Dating Mr. December just came out in the U.S. this month.

Emma Tremayne has moved to the Lake District (northern England) to become a PR director for the local tourist board after discovering her boyfriend is having an affair with her boss. To help the local Bannerdale Mountain Rescue Team raise money to build a new station, Emma formulates a plan for the rescue team to pose naked for a calendar. Her biggest opponent on this idea is Will Tennant. Will is a handsome, rugged man that Emma finds herself drawn to, although he has a bad reputation and is a thorn in her side about the calendar project. In order to help the team out, Will reluctantly decides to pose as Mr. December. Will Emma be able to find happiness leaving the big city behind and living the simpler life? And more important, will she find new love with Mr. December?

Dating Mr. December was a light quick read, with great steamy love scenes. I enjoyed the romance, but I did find Emma and Will’s lack of communication a bit trying at times. In some ways, Dating Mr. December reminded me of a light version of Pride and Prejudice. Emma misunderstands Will and is willing to believe the worst about him. She has to overcome her prejudice to really understand him.

Dating Mr. December was made into a Lifetime movie last year, 12 Men of Christmas starring Kristin Chenowith. I haven’t seen this movie, but I see it is playing again this year so I will definitely have to check it out!

Phillipa Ashley will have an author interview on this blog on Friday December 3rd. I can’t wait to find out more about her and this novel!
