Lady Maybe by Julie Klassen (Austenprose PR Book Tour)

What book would you like to reread?  I remember loving Lady Maybe by Julie Klassen ten years ago and I loved it just as much reading it again.  I read the new 10th anniversary edition in one day!

Hannah Rogers was formerly the companion of Lady Mayfield.  She has returned to ask for her job back after mysteriously disappearing months before.  Lady Marianna Mayfield rehires her to go on a trip with her and her husband Sir John Mayfield.  Sir John is trying to remove Marianna from being near her lover.  Along the way, the carriage is involved in a terrible accident.  Hannah wakes up confused and is being called Lady Mayfield.  She realizes being Lady Mayfield could solve many of her problems.  How will Hannah get out of this predicament?

My thoughts on this novel:

·       There were great characters, twists, and turns in this story.  I loved the twists and turns, and I don’t want to ruin it for other readers.

·       I also enjoyed the faith element and how Hannah tried to do the right thing by everyone and God.

·       This novel was set in Regency England and has shades of Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte mixed with Jane Austen’s Lady Susan.  I love author Julie Klassen and how her novels are a perfect blend of Charlotte Bronte and Jane Austen.

·       This is clean read, but there are some more sensual scenes that involve feelings of longing and kissing.  Adultery is on the main stage in this novel.

·       I liked how the characters, especially Hannah are conflicted and have a lot to work through.

·       There were also great well rounded side characters such as Dr. Parrish, Becky, and Mrs. Turrell.  I enjoyed them and their relationships with Hannah.

·       There is a love triangle as part of this story, and I always love a good love triangle.

What has changed in this edition?  From Julie Klassen, “I toned down the sensuality in a few scenes, expanded Mrs. Turrill’s wise mentor role a bit, improved and streamlined the writing in several places, and corrected many small historical inaccuracies throughout. The characters and story itself are the same, but I am very grateful for this opportunity to improve the first edition—I’ve learned a lot in the last ten years!”

Overall, Lady Maybe by Julie Klassen is romantic historical suspense at its best.  I highly recommend it.

Thank-you to @julie.k.klassen @bethanyhousefiction @austenprose for the review copy of this novel as part of the Austenprose PR Tour.

The Seaside Homecoming by Julie Klassen (AustenProse PR Book Tour)

Which book would you love to live in?  I always want to live in Regency England for a day.

Claire Summers is the disgraced eldest of five daughters.  She ran away to Gretna Green with a Lord hoping to be married, only to find herself abandoned and ruined.  She lives with her Great Aunt in Edinburgh afterwards as she is no longer welcome at home.  After her Great Aunt dies, she is left adrift.  She finds an advertisement for a “respectable female partner” for a boarding house in Sidmouth.  Her family has a home in Sidmouth and hoping to be able to connect with them again, she travels with her aunt’s maid Mary to Sidmouth with all the money she has.  Will she be able to make a go of it as a partner?  Will she be able to reconnect with her family?  Will she be able to find a second chance at love?

My thoughts on this novel:

·       This is the third novel in the On Devonshire Shores series.  I loved knowing all the sisters and their backgrounds from the previous books, but I believe you could read this as a standalone.

·       The setting of the seaside town is wonderful and scenic.  It allows for a constant stream of interesting visitors as well as scenic vistas for the characters to travel through.

·       I was fascinated by Claire herself as a character.  She is what would have happened to Lydia Bennet in Pride & Prejudice if Mr. Darcy had not forced Mr. Wickham to marry her.  It’s sad to think that while there were no repercussions for the man in the situation, the woman was “ruined” forever and could be cast out by her family.  They would not want the reputation of being a loose woman to hinder the other four girls from being married.  I had wondered about the mysterious Claire in the first two books, and I was excited to finally get to read about her.

·       I enjoyed the romance in this novel.  It was a second chance at love for both characters after sadness in their lives.  It was the first time the two of them had fallen in love with each other.  I also always enjoy when a romance brings people together to form a new family.

·       I liked that Claire was able to come back to her family and work on getting forgiveness.  I liked that her sisters and mother all were able to forgive, it just took longer for her mother.

·       There was also an interesting look into prejudice during the Regency era.  Mr. Hammond who owns the boarding house, was once married to an Indian woman and has a child, Mira, who is part Indian.  Sonali was a friend of the late Mrs. Hammond and has stayed to care for Mira.  As the only Indian woman in a rural part of England, she is a unique person.

·       I was excited to see that this story will continue next year with Christmas at Seaview.  I enjoyed the sneak peak at the end of the novel.  I enjoy these characters, story, and setting and I love Regency Christmas romance.  I am so excited about this!

·       I also enjoyed the authors note and discussion questions at the end of the novel.

Overall, The Seaside Homecoming by Julie Klassen was a wonderful regency romance novel with great characters, setting, and story.  It was like reading a Christmas gift for myself.  I highly recommend this novel.

A Winter by the Sea by Julie Klassen (Austenprose PR Book Tour)

What do you look for in a book cover?  I think the cover of A Winter by the Sea is beautiful.  I love the colors, especially the purple dress.  I also like that you can see the entire lady including her face.  I don’t really like the covers with people walking away or that just show a headless torso.

The Summers family run a guest lodging out of their seaside home in Sidmouth in order to make ends meet after their former estate was entailed to a distant cousin after the death of their father.  Winter has become more exciting this year when the Duke and Duchess of Kent, with their infant daughter Victoria, take up residence in a neighboring home for the Duke’s health.  One of the younger sisters, Emily, decides to follow her dreams to become an author by putting together a guidebook for Sidmouth to be published by a local publisher.  As she starts to have feelings for the Duke’s secretary, James Thomson, her previous neighbor and crush, Charles Parker and his parents show up for a visit to Sidmouth.  Will Emily’s dreams of becoming an author come true?  Will her previous dream of marrying Charles Parker and returning to her old neighborhood come true or will she forge a new path with James Thomson?

Julie Klassen is one of my favorite authors.  I love her inspirational Regency novels.  She writes beautiful stories with intriguing characters set in the Regency world that I enjoy.  I loved book one in this On Devonshire Shores series, The Sisters of Sea View. This was a perfect continuation.  While the first book focused on Viola, the second book focuses on her twin sister Emily.  I’m looking forward to getting a book or story for each of the sisters.  I hope that the eldest scandal ridden sister, Claire, who is in Scotland also gets her story told.  A Winter by the Sea can be read as a standalone, but I loved knowing the background of the characters from the first book.  It’s a series worth reading.

I also enjoyed that the characters celebrated a Regency Christmas at the beginning of the novel which made it a fun read for this time of year.  I also enjoyed the love triangle in this novel, and the growth of the character of Emily in both this novel and the first one.  I loved seeing how she had to realize, what did she really want out of life?  Were her childhood dreams still the same dreams she had now?  Was she willing to forgive past slights?

Overall, A Winter by the Sea is an excellent inspirational Regency novel with vivid characters, a great setting, and a pleasing story.  I highly recommend it.

AUTHOR MESSAGE

Dear Readers,

I am excited to give you an insider’s look at my December 2023 novel, A Winter by the Sea. This is the second book in the On Devonshire Shores series. Book One, The Sisters of Sea View, has been enthusiastically received and reviewed. I am grateful for each of you who helped spread the word about it!

During my research, I learned that the Duke and Duchess of Kent and their baby daughter stayed in Woolbrook Cottage (very near fictional Sea View) during the winter of 1819-1820. I instantly knew I wanted to include them in the novel to give readers a glimpse of the early life of Queen Victoria and her parents. The royal party arrived with too many attendants to accommodate at Woolbrook, so some were lodged elsewhere. I thought it would be fun to have a few staff members stay at Sea View, including a pastry chef who invades their kitchen, a man in desperate straits, and the duke’s handsome private secretary.

It was also interesting to write a seaside novel set during wintertime (it was unusually cold and snowy that year). Because I live in frigid Minnesota, cold weather details and sensations were easy to imagine. 😊

When I began writing this series, I had not yet traveled to Sidmouth, where the series is set. I am happy to say I was able to visit in August 2022 and was thrilled to experience this delightful town in person. The highlight of that trip was meeting the staff and volunteers of the Sidmouth Museum who have been extremely helpful in answering research questions and checking setting details for me.

A Winter by the Sea focuses on beautiful Emily Summers, who finds herself caught up in two rivalries. First, while striving to further her writing aspirations, Emily is torn between her loyalty to a well-established publisher & bookseller and his flamboyant competitor. Second, despite her best intentions, she is attracted to one of their new guests, but an old love comes to town, determined to renew their courtship.

I hope you are eager to return with me to the English seaside for Book Two of the On Devonshire Shores series. Thank you for all you do to support my books, and readers everywhere!

Gratefully, Julie

The Sisters of Sea View by Julie Klassen (Austenprose PR Book Tour)

Do you have an auto-read author?  An author that as soon as they publish something new, you have to read it right away?  Julie Klassen is just such an author for me.  I was happy to be invited to be a part of the Austenprose PR Book Tour and to be able to post my review on the release day of The Sisters of Sea view.

The Summers Sisters and their Mother are left without a sufficient income at the death of their father.  Luckily for them, while their father’s estate was entailed away, he did manage to buy a house on the shores of Devonshire in Sidmouth, Sea View.  Sarah, the eldest, is determined to keep the family together and comes up with a plan.  Can they open their home to guests in order to stay together and make a living?

Viola and Emily are twins.  While Emily loves the spotlight, Viola remains in the shadows wearing a veil.  She was born with a harelip which was fixed surgically.  She does not want to help with hosting visitors, so she starts to read to invalids for money.  Her first client is gruff man in his thirties who has returned with wounds from India.  Will she be able to see past his exterior to the man inside?

Georgina is the youngest sister and full of fun.  She wonders what happened to her eldest sister, Claire.  Claire suddenly left to become a companion to an elderly aunt in Scotland.  Why have they never heard from her again?

I loved, loved, loved this novel.  I couldn’t put it down and it was pure joy to read it.  The setting was intriguing, and the characters were wonderful and fully developed.  I loved the sisters, their servants, and getting to know the people that stayed at Sea View.  The sweet romances that were started were also very romantic.  I can’t see what happens next.  This is the first novel in a planned series.

One of my favorite parts of reading this were all of the fun call-backs to Jane Austen.  At first when Mr. and Mrs. Elton showed up as guests, I thought they shared the names of Austen characters.  Then I was pleasantly surprised to discover they were the characters from Emma by Jane Austen.  You can read the novel not knowing this and be fine, but it makes it extra delightful for fans of Jane Austen.  The theme of five sisters and their mother trying to find their way after the estate is entailed is straight from Pride and Prejudice.  It felt like the Bennet sisters and their invalid mother, except they were in a better place with owning Sea View.  This story also shared a “ruined” sister.  The characters were completely different than Pride and Prejudice, but I loved the call backs.

I highly recommend The Sisters of Sea View if you love Jane Austen, regency romance, great character driven stories, or just a great book overall.

Some guests have come for a holiday, others for hidden reasons of their own . . .

When their father's death leaves them impoverished, Sarah Summers and her genteel sisters fear they will be forced to sell the house and separate to earn livelihoods as governesses or companions. Determined to stay together, Sarah convinces them to open their seaside home to guests to make ends meet and provide for their ailing mother. Instead of the elderly invalids they expect to receive, however, they find themselves hosting eligible gentlemen. Sarah is soon torn between a growing attraction to a mysterious Scottish widower and duty to her family.

Viola Summers wears a veil to cover her scar. When forced to choose between helping in her family's new guest house and earning money to hire a maid to do her share, she chooses the latter. She reluctantly agrees to read to some of Sidmouth's many invalids, preferring the company of a few elders with failing eyesight to the fashionable guests staying in their home. But when her first client turns out to be a wounded officer in his thirties, Viola soon wishes she had chosen differently. Her new situation exposes her scars--both visible and those hidden deep within--and her cloistered heart will never be the same.

Join the Summers sisters on the Devonshire coast, where they discover the power of friendship, loyalty, love, and new beginnings.

Shadows of Swanford Abbey by Julie Klassen (Austenprose PR Book Tour)

Miss Rebecca Lane is a paid companion to Lady Fitzhoward in the year 1820.  She has finally returned to her home village in England after traveling for the past few years.  She is surprised to find her brother in a state.  He has no room for her in the lodge he lives in, and he would like her to deliver his latest manuscript to a publisher that is staying at the nearby Swanford Abbey.

Swanford Abbey has been transformed into a high-class hotel.  Lady Fitzhoward is also staying at the Abbey and Rebecca is able to get a small room that fits into her budget.  Her childhood friend and crush, Sir Frederick, is also staying at the abbey. Rebecca starts to notice strange things such as a mysterious figure gliding around dressed as a nun and hushed secret conversations.  When a guest is murdered, Rebecca fears that it may have been her brother.  As Sir Frederick investigates, will Rebecca be able to prove her and her brother’s innocence?

I loved this novel.  It is a perfect combination of gothic and romance.  It is like a Jane Austen novel and Charlotte Bronte novel blended together.  I loved all of the gothic details such as the mysterious figure, secret staircases, mysterious deaths, etc.  I also loved that everyone seemed to have a secret, but they all had a good explanation.  Rebecca is a great character.  I loved her world of being the daughter of a vicar but having to be a paid companion.  She’s not quite a lady and not quite a servant and is in a precarious social position.  I also loved Sir Frederick and the secret of his past with his first wife.  I love how he took over the investigation and helped to solve the mystery.

I have enjoyed Julie Klassen’s novels in the past.  This one is more of a suspense and historical mystery like The Secret of Pembroke Park.  I enjoyed it.

Overall, Shadows of Swanford Abbey is a wonderful historical mystery with great characters and story.  I highly recommend it.
