Darcy in Wonderland by Alexa Adams

Darcy in Wonderland is a delightful tale that combines two of my favorite British stories, Pride & Prejudice and Alice in Wonderland.  Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy have married and are raising a family of one son and five daughters.  The youngest daughter, Alice, is prone to fits of fancy that Darcy can’t help but indulge as a father.

As Alice’s oldest sister prepares for her coming out ball and her brother prepares to make his way in the world, Alice remains stuck in the schoolroom.  Behind on her lessons, her father stays behind to catch her up while the rest of the family visits the Bingley family.  While outside, they follow a mysterious white rabbit down a rabbit hole and have a grand adventure in Wonderland.

I found this novel to be very enjoyable with charming illustrations.  One of my favorite scenes was the tea party in Wonderland which was a fantastic comedy of manners with Mr. Darcy trying to maintain good manners, which is increasingly hard to do with the Mad Hatter in attendance.   I thought this novel was a perfect blend of both tales.

Adams wrote the characters from Pride and Prejudice as I would imagine them in a future life.  Their children were intriguing as well. I wanted to learn more about this Pride and Prejudice continuation and would love to read further tales!  One of my favorite parts of the novel was a perfect conclusion with Bennet, the Darcy’s eldest and only son.  He is already knee deep in the work of running the Pemberley estate, but after Darcy’s adventure in Wonderland with Alice, he realizes that Bennet should have some fun before becoming an adult.  I loved this!

Favorite Quotes:

“As I said, you are too easy on Alice.  If you and my mother do not take her in hand and impose reality upon her, the world will someday do it for you, and it will be a far more difficult lesson to learn.”

“’I suppose one really must laugh at one’s own relations, the private company of one’s fellow sufferers, of course, for how else are they to be born?’ Elizabeth conceded. “

“’When I used to read fairy tales,’ she continued, unfazed, ‘I fancied those kinds of things never happened, and now here we are in the middle of one!’”

“’A Darcy, are you?’ cried the Pigeon. ‘And what in heaven’s name is a Darcy, I ask? You just invented it.’
'I am a gentleman, madam,’ he assured her, attempting to check his irritation and live up to the title.”

“’But I do hate tampering with the laws of physics.  No good shall come of it.’”

“’Very fine indeed.’ said Darcy, really wanting to question the creature with whom this entire sorry adventure began, but his innate breeding insisted a mundane comment must be addressed in kind”

Overall, Darcy in Wonderland is a whimsical delight that is sure to be enjoyed by most readers.  It’s not to be missed if you are a Pride and Prejudice fan, it is a wonderful continuation of the story.

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll

Title: Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland
Author: Lewis Carroll
Read by: Tim Gerard Reynolds
Publisher: Dreamscape
Audio
Length: 3 hours and 5 minutes (3 discs)
Source: Review Copy from Audiobook Jukebox – Thanks!

What began as an imaginative tale told to entertain three small girls on a row boat trip in 1862, three years later became a class novel written by Charles Dodgson (known mostly by his pseudonym Lewis Carroll).  Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is a very imaginative unique tale about a young girl, Alice that falls down a rabbit hole and has many adventures in the underground world of Wonderland.

Honestly all I knew about Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland before I listened to this great audiobook was from the Disney cartoon Alice in Wonderland.  I wondered how much the two would relate and I was surprised that the Disney cartoon followed the novel very faithfully with all of the main characters involved, the white rabbit, Mad Hatter, Cheshire cat, the Queen who wants to chop everyone’s head off, etc.  I noticed the book though has more detail as one would expect and the story goes on longer in the book as well before Alice makes it back to the everyday world.

Tim Reynolds did a fantastic job as a narrator, especially as he was a narrator with a British accent.   My almost eight –year old son Daniel listened to this audiobook with me when I first started it on the way home from an event.  He really enjoyed it and the wit of the book made him laugh out loud several times.  I enjoyed the wit and just supreme silliness of it all as well.

Overall, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is a highly imaginative and unique story that works wonderfully well in the audiobook format, like reading the story aloud in front of a fire.  It is enjoyable for both adults and children alike.

Victorian Challenge Nov/Dec and Wrap-Up

I have been very neglectful of the Victorian Challenge. What I didn’t anticipate when I started the challenge was that I would be going back to work full time in May and developing a brand new environmental engineering technology degree at our local technical college. Between my new job and my family, I haven’t been able to devote myself to this challenge as I originally intended too. That is why you will note that I lost steam and the ability to keep up after May for the challenge. I had some great guest blogs the first half of the year that died off the second half. I sincerely apologize for all of those that signed up for this challenge.

I will not be hosting this challenge for 2013. What I will most likely do is either host a summer challenge in 2014 (my first summer off) or will focus on Victorian authors in summer months. What would sound best to you? Would you be interested in the future?

November was Lewis Carroll month and December is Louisa May Alcott month. I am thoroughly enjoying listening to Little Women, a digital audiobook with Christina Ricci as the narrator. I will post my review hopefully in the next week or two. What are your favorite novels by Carroll and Alcott? I myself was obsessed with Louisa May Alcott as a youth. I loved reading her biographies and especially her novels Little Women and An Old Fashioned Girl. I’ve read Rose in Bloom, Eight Cousins, etc., but strangely, I have never read Little Men or Jo’s Boys, even though I bought myself a copy of each as a youth with hard earned dollars. I have them both on my night stand and hope to get to them soon.

What was your favorite Victorian read this year? Who is your favorite Victorian author? Does Alcott’s Little Women or Dickens’s A Christmas Carol make it on your yearly Christmas reading list? Please share your thoughts.

Thank-you for being a part of this challenge. Please post any last entries or wrap-up posts below. If you don’t finish up this month, you can continue to add to this post in the future.

Post your  reviews below in the following format Laura’s Reviews (Little Women).
