Slow Dance by Rainbow Powell

Title: Slow Dance

Author: Rainbow Powell

Narrated by: Rebecca Lowman

Publisher: HarperAudio

Length: Approximately 11 hours and 31 minutes

Source: Audiobook Purchased from Audible

Do you like to dance?  My husband and I enjoy dancing, although we don’t get to do it too often with our busy kids’ schedules.

Shiloh and Cary were best friends in high school and everyone around them expected them to get together.  Life did not work out that way and Shiloh went off to college while Cary shipped off to the Navy.  Over the years, the two keep passing back into each other’s life.  Is there a good time for a second chance at romance?

My thoughts on this novel:

·       This was the February pick for the Page-turners Book Club at the Kewaunee Public Library.  Unfortunately, I was unable to attend the meeting due to work commitments.

·       I had a really hard time with this book.  The plot move very slowly, and I had a hard time connecting with the characters or even liking them as people.

·       I read about 100 pages of the novel and then I switched to the audiobook version which worked better for me.

·       This novel had lots and lots and lots of flashbacks.  I am usually a fan of flashbacks, but there were just too many through too many time periods in this one to keep me enjoying the story.

·       This was a second chance romance which is one of my favorite tropes.  I did like that it showed a different type of couple with a divorced mother of two living with her mother and a single military man trying to take care of his mother and family as well.

·       This was a steamy romance, although most of the steam was the end of the novel.

Overall, Slow Dance by Rainbow Powell was too slow of a dance of a novel for me.  I read it through to the end, but really didn’t enjoy the characters or story.

The Christmas Inn by Pamela Kelley

Title: The Christmas Inn

Author:  Pamela Kelley

Narrated by:  Stephanie Németh-Parker

Publisher: Macmillan Audio

Length: Approximately 8 hours and 41 minutes

Source: Audiobook Review Copy from NetGalley.

What type of books are your cozy reads?  Christmas books are some of my coziest reads.

Riley Sanders loses her job right before Christmas when her job is made redundant by AI.  Her mother has recently broken her leg and needs help at the Inn she owns, so Riley returns to the Inn to help.  She meets and gets to know a variety of guests that are all going through issues of their own.  Will there be a merry Christmas for everyone?  Her ex-boyfriend Aiden and his son are also staying at the Inn.  Seeing Aiden makes her think about her relationship with her current boyfriend Jack.  He is a workaholic and does not have much time for her or their relationship.  Will Aiden and Riley find romance?

My thoughts on this novel:

·       This was a very enjoyable Christmas audiobook and enjoyable read.  Stephanie Németh-Parker was a great narrator.  There are multiple point of views and narrators in the story.  It did take me a bit at times to remember where I was in the story and with who when I would start it up again.

·       Riley and Aiden were the main characters, but the other characters were also well developed and had interesting storylines.

·       I liked that there were people all different age groups involved in the story.

·       I also liked the sub story of how Riley helped her mother with marketing to try to save the Inn.

·       Second chance romance is one of my favorite tropes and I loved it in this novel.

·       This is a clean and cozy read.

Overall, The Christmas Inn by Pamela Kelley is a sweet contemporary romance that is perfect for lover of Christmas Hallmark movies.

With This Ring by Amy Clipston (Austenprose PR Book Tour)

Title: With This Ring

Author:  Amy Clipston

Narrated by:  Brittany Goodwin

Publisher: Thomas Nelson

Length: Approximately 8 hours and 45 minutes

Source: Audiobook Review Copy from NetGalley, physical book copy from Thomas Nelson as a part of the Austenprose PR Book Tour. Thank you!

Do you like to wear rings?  Do you have a favorite ring or one that is the most meaningful?

Dakota and Huson broke off their engagement seven years before when Hudson left their small town for New York City with dreams of making it big in business.  Dakota stayed behind and pursued her dream of starting a bridal boutique.  Hudson has returned to town after selling his company as his sister is engaged and planning her wedding.  Will Dakota and Hudson reconnect?  Will they be able to work through their problems from the past?

My thoughts on this novel:

·       As February nears, I was in a mood to read a romance novel.  This had one of my favorite tropes – second chance romance.

·       This novel was a lot of fun.  My favorite part was that there was roller-skating rink that one of Dakota’s friends had bought, restored, and runs.  Dakota teaches skating lessons there on the weekend.  There are fun activities, and it is the core of the social scene in town.

·       The fictional setting was Flowering Grove, North Carolina.  I loved the name of this town!

·       There is just something I love about bridal boutiques.  I enjoy reading about them and Dakota’s struggles as she tries to keep her business afloat.  She needs to learn how to ask for help, but Hudson needs to learn to stop controlling everyone.

·       Hudson drove me insane when he would just throw money at everything and boss everyone around.  He was so rude to his sister and her fiancé.

·       Hudson’s pursuit of money alienated both his family and Dakota.  He reminded me of Ebenezer Scrooge at times.  I like that by the end of the novel, the reader understands why he behaved the way he did.

·       I liked that Hudson and Dakota both had redemptive arcs, and both had to learn how to be their best selves and the best to those they love in their lives.

·       This is a clean romance.

·       I listened to the audiobook.  The narrator was great, and it was a fun book.  There were some odd pauses in the audiobook, but that may be because it was a review copy.

Overall, With this Ring by Amy Clipston is a sweet, clean second chance romance with a redemptive arc.  If this novel doesn’t make you want to roller-skate, I don’t know what will.

BOOK DESCRIPTION

Dakota Jamison spends her days making brides’ dreams come true. But when will the time finally come for her own storybook ending?

Dakota thought she had left her dreams of happily-ever-after behind, along with the pain of a broken engagement to her high school sweetheart, Hudson. Now, as the proud owner of Fairytale Bridal Shop in the picturesque town of Flowering Grove, she's built a life and a business on helping brides find their perfect dress for their own fairytale weddings. But running a small business is not for the faint of heart, and when her ex-fiancé unexpectedly returns to town with a mission—to put a stop to his sister's wedding—Dakota’s problems go from bad to worse.

Hudson Garrity should be living his dream. After selling his software company, he’s single, handsome, and rich, but an unexpected call from his baby sister has him flying down to his hometown, determined to protect Layla from yet another big mistake. Though he’s single-minded in his effort to derail the nuptials, he instead finds himself thrown into family chaos and roped into helping his sister with her plans . . . bringing him once more into contact with Dakota Jamison, the one who got away.

For Hudson, coming home means revisiting his painful childhood, repairing a strained relationship with his sister, and coming face-to-face with the woman he never stopped loving. For Dakota, it means confronting the tender memories she buried deep within her heart. As Layla’s wedding date draws close, the two reunited lovers begin to question if what went wrong between them really happened the way they remembered it at all. Will they continue believing the lies they’ve told themselves, or will they remain forever entangled in the threads of what could have been?

With This Ring by bestselling novelist Amy Clipston is a touching tale of rekindled romance, rediscovery, and the transformative power of forgiveness.

Dear Eliza by Andrea J. Stein

How do you remember people you’ve lost in your life?  I like to reread old letters from my grandmothers that I received in the past.  It’s fun to “hear” their voices again.  I also love looking at old pictures.

In Dear Eliza, Eliza Levinger receives a letter ten years after her mother died of cancer that rocks her world.  Her mother, Laura, had given the letter to her sister, Claude, to give to Eliza after her father’s death.  In it, she discovers a shocking revelation.  It rocks Eliza’s world, and she has to deal with the fallout.  How will she move forward with this new knowledge?  What is holding her back in life?

My thoughts on this novel:

·       I greatly enjoyed this book and all the characters.  I loved Eliza, her brother Scott, sister-in-law Maren, best friend Mo, and her brother Scott’s life long best friend Josh.  I enjoyed their friendships, relationships, and wanted to read more about them. I was sad when this book ended as I wanted to spend more time in their world.

·       I loved the friends to lovers, slow burn, and kind of second chance romance between Eliza and Josh.  I loved how supportive Josh was to Eliza, but wondered why he wasn’t there during her time of need after Eliza’s mother’s death.  Josh and Eliza had wonderful interactions.

·       This novel deals with grief in many ways.  After Laura’s death when Eliza was 16, Eliza was floundering with no help.  Her father married not long afterwards, and Eliza did not have a good relationship with her stepmother Carol.  Eliza never was able to properly grieve.  Her relationship with her father never was the same and was distant.  When he dies, Eliza feels terrible for what was and what could have been.

·       Although Laura was not alive in this novel, she made me angry.  I didn’t like the bombshell that she had her sister give to Eliza right after her father’s death.  It was a time of intense grief and not a time for Eliza to have to deal with a whole new set of problems.  I wish she would have left positive messages that Eliza could have gotten after her death.  I guess if I were Eliza, I would have liked to know what Laura had to say, but there could have been a better time for it.

·       I liked the New York City setting.

·       I like how Eliza was able to reset her life after the news.  She realized that her relationships were not the best with her family or in her love life.  I like how she was able to make a change for the better.

·       I want to talk about this book more, but I don’t want to give away the details and ruin it for anyone else.  I think this would be a great book club selection. I would also like to watch a movie based on this novel.

Overall, Dear Eliza by Andrea J. Stein is a beautifully written novel of self-discovery, grief, love, forgiveness, family and starting over again.  I enjoyed this novel, and I can’t wait to see what Stein writes next!

The Winged Tiara by J’Nell Ciesielski (Austenprose PR Book Tour)

Title: The Winged Tiara

Author:  J’Nell Ciesielski

Narrated by:  Ann Marie Gideon

Publisher: Thomas Nelson

Length: Approximately 9 hours and 31 minutes

Source: Thank you @jnellciesielski @thomasnelson @austenprose for the physical review copy and @netgalley audiobook review copy of of The Winged Tiara.

What book are you most likely to gift to a friend?  I like to give books to friends or family that I think they will like.  Sometimes I read a book, enjoy it and immediately think of who else I know that will also enjoy the book.  The Winged Tiara was a book I instantly knew a few friends and family members would enjoy.

Jasper and Esme were caught up in celebrations after the end of WWI and had a quick alcohol filled marriage.  Esme slipped away the next morning.  Years later, the two meet up again as both are famous jewel thieves on the hunt for the elusive winged Valkyrie Tiara. Will they find the tiara, and will they find their way back to each other?

My thoughts on this book:

·       I loved the witty banter and romantic tension between the two main characters.  Sparks definitely fly in this novel.

·       This book reminded me of many of my favorite movies that had romantic tension, witty dialogue, a love/hate relationship, and one upmanship among the leads including To Catch a Thief, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, The Thin Man, or The Thomas Crown Affair.

·       I loved the constant adventure with their pursuit of the winged tiara.

·       The audiobook had a great narrator with unique voices for all the characters.  It was so fun to listen to this audiobook!

·       The narrative was fast paced.

·       I loved the roaring 20’s setting among the elite and glamorous in Europe.

·       This was a clean read.

·       Two of my favorite tropes were in this novel including enemies to lovers and second chance romance.

·       Esme and Jasper were both great characters.  They were both interesting with flaws, fears, and ambitions.

·       There is a nice set of discussion questions at the end of the novel which would be great for a book club.

Overall, The Winged Tiara is one of the best books I’ve read this year.  I highly recommend this historical romance.  I would love to see this as a movie.

BOOK DESCRIPTION

Diamonds and danger dazzle in Ciesielski's latest enchanting romp through post-war Europe as estranged spouses and jewel thieves hunt an elusive Valkyrie tiara.

November 12, 1918. It was a match made in champagne-soaked heaven, but all too soon the bubbles dried up, and Esme Fox awakens the morning after celebrating the end of the Great War to find herself shockingly and accidentally married. She gathers her belongings and slips out before her new husband can stop her. After all, she knows it's best to leave before he does.

Four years later, Jasper Truitt, after having made a name for himself in the underground world of jewel thieves, is on the hunt for a valuable heirloom: a one-of-a-kind winged tiara--the last Valkyrie tiara ever created. So it's with great surprise that he discovers it at a charity event atop the head of a woman he's never forgotten. His long-lost wife . . . who happens to be pursuing the tiara for a vengeful opera diva desperate to obtain the jewel for herself.

The reunion is cut short when Esme vanishes--again--but their separation is temporary. With a hitman on their heels and a deadline looming, the pair find themselves in an epic game of cat and mouse across Europe following leads from the French Riviera to a shop of wonders in Venice, a fairy-tale castle in Bavaria, and a veritable circus thrown by a champagne heiress, all before a dramatic horseback flight through the French countryside.

In the end only one can win, and with both of their hearts on the line, the winner may well turn out to be the loser.

In her latest glamorous historical romance, J'nell Ciesielski spins a sparkling story filled with her signature snappy dialogue and vivid atmosphere that will keep you reading late into the night to see what happens next.

The British Booksellers by Kristy Cambron (Austenprose PR Book Tour)

Title:  The British Booksellers

Author:  Kristy Cambron

Narrated by:  Barrie Kreinik

Publisher:  Thomas Nelson

Length: Approximately 11 hours and 18 minutes

Source: Thank-you to NetGalley for the audiobook review copy.  Thank-you Thomas Nelson and Austenprose for the review copy of the physical book.

Do you like to read books about bookstores or libraries?  I love to visit both, and I enjoy reading books about them.

The British Booksellers is a dual timeline novel set during WWI and WWII.  In the pre-WWI timeline, there is a love triangle. Amos Darby is a farmer’s son and is in love with Charlotte Terrington, an heiress. Will Holt is the Earl’s son and also in love with Charlotte.  Charlotte has been promised in marriage to Will, but what happened to her relationship with Amos?  What happened to Will?  In the WWII era, Charlotte and her daughter Eden ran a bookshop in Coventry.  Across the street is their bitter rival, Amos Darby and his bookshop.  When a mysterious American comes to town with a legal case against Eden, will all the secrets of the past come out?

My thoughts on this novel:

·       I really enjoyed the dual timeline and how they perfectly went together.  The events of the past were finally revealed at the end of the WWII era to explain what was happening at the time.

·       The story was told through multiple points of view.

·       It was interesting how the trauma of WWI (the Great War) had ripple effects that impacted the next generation that were then at the forefront of WWII.  It’s always sad to me that there was not any help for soldiers who suffered from PTSD.

·       The Coventry blitz was devastating.  Afterwards, the Germans termed a new term in modern warfare:  Coventrieren which means “to devastate or raze a city to the ground.”

·       The build-up to the blitz was also nail-biting as bombs started to fall, the finding of hidden German paratrooper gear, and questions on whether the American lawyer is really an American or a German spy.

·

I liked the addition of the land girls to the story and how they came to town to help run the Holt estate.

·       I really enjoyed the characters in this novel.  I particularly enjoyed that when I thought a character was not a good person like WWII era Amos, or WWI era Will, the story grew deeper, and more complex as you learned more about each person and that there was more to them than met the eye.

·       This story was also about forgiveness, second chances, and moving forward with life after a devastating occurrence.

·       It was interesting how the differences between classes was strict before WWI, but had eased by the time of WWII.

·       I listened to this book on audiobook.  Barrie Kreinik was a wonderful narrator, and I especially enjoyed the voice acting.

·       I enjoyed that this novel had both a second chance romance as well as an enemies to lovers romance.

·       This novel was a clean read.

·       Author Kristy Cambron included a great author’s note that explained her inspirations and the real history behind this novel.

Overall, The British Booksellers by Kristy Cambron is a compelling historical fiction novel with engaging characters and a great dual timeline plot.  I highly recommend it.

BOOK DESCRIPTION

Inspired by real accounts of the Forgotten Blitz bombings, The British Booksellers highlights the courage of those whose lives were forever changed by war—and the stories that bind us in the fight for what matters most.

A tenant farmer’s son had no business daring to dream of a future with an earl’s daughter, but that couldn’t keep Amos Darby from his secret friendship with Charlotte Terrington…until the reality of the Great War sobered youthful dreams. Now decades later, he bears the brutal scars of battles fought in the trenches and their futures that were stolen away. His return home doesn’t come with tender reunions, but with the hollow fulfillment of opening a bookshop on his own and retreating as a recluse within its walls.

When the future Earl of Harcourt chose Charlotte to be his wife, she knew she was destined for a loveless match. Though her heart had chosen another long ago, she pledges her future even as her husband goes to war. Twenty-five years later, Charlotte remains a war widow who divides her days between her late husband’s declining estate and operating a quaint Coventry bookshop—Eden Books, lovingly named after her grown daughter. And Amos is nothing more than the rival bookseller across the lane.

As war with Hitler looms, Eden is determined to preserve her father’s legacy. So when an American solicitor arrives threatening a lawsuit that could destroy everything they’ve worked so hard to preserve, mother and daughter prepare to fight back. But with devastation wrought by the Luftwaffe’s local blitz terrorizing the skies, battling bookshops—and lost loves, Amos and Charlotte—must put aside their differences and fight together to help Coventry survive.

From deep in the trenches of the Great War to the storied English countryside and the devastating Coventry Blitz of World War II, The British Booksellers explores the unbreakable bonds that unite us through love, loss, and the enduring solace that can be found between the pages of a book.

The Lily of Ludgate Hill by Mimi Matthews (Austenprose PR Book Tour)

Do you prefer to read an eBook or a physical book?  I enjoy reading both.  I read The Lily of Ludgate Hill as an eBook.  The benefits of reading on my eBook is that I can read far into the night without having the light on and bothering my husband.

The Lily of Ludgate Hill is the third book in the Belles of London series by Mimi Matthews.  I absolutely loved this series set during the Victorian period.  The books feature four horse loving friends with each book telling one of the friends’ story.  These books can be read as standalones, but I recommend reading the entire series as it is excellent.  Characters from the first books also appear in the subsequent books and you will get more out of their appearances if you know their back stories.

The Lily of Ludgate Hill is Lady Anne Deveril’s story.  Six years ago, Lady Anne’s father died, and a distant male relative inherited the Earldom.  Lady Anne and her mother went into mourning, and they still have not come out from it.  Her mother is fascinated by spiritualism and hopes to contact her dead husband.  Anne just hopes to keep her mother alive and off opium.  Felix “Hart” Hartford was her friend growing up and their friendship blossomed to love just before Anne’s father passed away.  Hart left for a year of travel with his grandfather and Anne was left caring for her mother.  When Hart returned, they had a misunderstanding, and their fledging romance was no more.  Now six years later, will they be able to put the misunderstandings away and have a second chance at romance?

I loved this book.  Matthews writes such vivid characters. I loved both Anne and Hart and learning more about both.  I could understand how Anne felt that she needed to take care of her mother.  I liked how Hart seemed like a man without a care in the world, but Anne soon learns that he has a lot of people to care about and works hard to help them out and protect his family.  They have both turned into caregivers and are strong people who understand each other in that role.  I also loved Anne’s love for her old horse and the horses of her late father’s stable.  I detested Anne’s cousin and his takeover of the family’s London home.  The inheritance rules of the day were so unfair.    I enjoyed how Anne and Hart’s understanding of each other, and romance grew throughout the novel.  Second chance romance is one of my favorite tropes and I loved experiencing Anne and Hart’s second chance.  This was also a slow burn romance novel.

I also appreciated that the reader got to see the other sides of stories that were alluded to in the other novels and to see further development of the characters from the first two novels.  It was like revisiting old friends.

The Lily of Ludgate Hill is a clean romance.

Sidenote, I went to college at Michigan Technological University and was fascinated by the copper mines and took a Copper Country history course on mining.  Hart has business dealings with mining involved and I found it to be very interesting.

Favorite Quote:

“There was nothing left now but the same lingering bitterness that had plagued her since the infamous day she’s broken their engagement.”

Overall, The Lily of Ludgate Hill was another enjoyable historical romance novel and a great addition to the Belles of London series from Mimi Matthews.  She is one of my favorite historical romance authors with her engaging stories and well-developed characters.

BOOK DESCRIPTION

A BookBub Best Romance of Winter 2024!

Fortune favors the bold—but is a confirmed spinster daring enough to loosen the reins and accept a favor from the wicked gentleman who haunts her dreams?

Lady Anne Deveril doesn’t spook easily. A woman of lofty social standing known for her glacial beauty and starchy opinions, she’s the unofficial leader of her small group of equestriennes. Since her mother’s devastating plunge into mourning six years ago, Anne voluntarily renounced any fanciful notions of love and marriage. And yet, when fate puts Anne back into the entirely too enticing path of Mr. Felix Hartford, she’s tempted to run…right into his arms.

No one understands why Lady Anne withdrew into the shadows of society, Hart least of all. The youthful torch he once held for her has long since cooled. Or so he keeps telling himself. But now Anne needs a favor to help a friend. Hart will play along with her little ruse—on the condition that Anne attend a holiday house party at his grandfather’s country estate. No more mourning clothes. No more barriers. Only the two of them, unrequited feelings at last laid bare.

Finally free to gallop out on her own, Anne makes the tantalizing discovery that beneath the roguish exterior of her not-so-white knight is a man with hidden depths, scorching passions—and a tender heart.
