Hank the Cowdog by John R. Erickson

Hank is the Head of Ranch Security and is very proud of himself and his position.  He is trying to train the new ranch dog Drover on how to be a great ranch dog. With a mysterious murder on hand, Hank does his best to track down the criminals at fault.   After Hank has been accused of murdering a chicken on the ranch, he resigns his position on the farm and joins a gang of coyotes.  There he meets the beautiful Missy Coyote and her scoundrel brother, Scraunch.  When the coyotes threaten the ranch and Drover, will Hank remain part of the wild or defend the ranch?

The boys read this book for the Youth Book Club at Kewaunee Public Library.  It was a good level for my third grade son Kile and we took turns reading it to my first grade son Daniel.  They both thought it was pretty funny and enjoyed that it was a story about a dog.  Daniel said his favorite part was the ending, he keeps laughing about it.  They also enjoyed that Hank had a very inflated view of himself which did not always match reality.

The boys will be discussing it at the library tomorrow and will probably pick another Hank book out in the future.
