If you could meet any author alive or dead, who would you want to meet?  I love the adventure of the Stevenson sisters in Austen at Sea to see the brother of a most beloved author.  I would love to meet Jane Austen, the Bronte Sisters, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Louisa May Alcott and so many more.

Charlotte and Henrietta Stevenson are the daughters of a Massachusetts State Supreme Court judge.  They want more out of this world.  They wish they could go to college or have a career, but in 1865, their formal education is complete.  Their favorite author is Jane Austen.  They write to her only surviving brother, Sir Francis Austen to express their love and to learn more about her.  He invites the two sisters to visit England, as well as two brothers who are rare booksellers from Philadelphia.  What rare artifact does he want them to see?

Thoughts on this novel:

·       I loved the world, great characters, and unique story of this novel.  I wish I could visit this world.

·       The overarching question of this novel was what are the rights of women?  Can a wife own her own property separate from her husband?  Can she make her own decisions about her property?

·       I loved the sections of the novel where the Massachusetts State Supreme Court judges read Jane Austen’s novels and discuss them.  It was entertaining.

·       Louisa May Alcott is on the ship with our main characters as they journey to England.  She was a fantastic and fully sketched character.  I love that she had the ship put on a play of A Tale of Two Cities for entertainment.  I would love to see an entirely separate novel on just Louisa’s adventures.

·       I loved Sir Francis Austen as a character.  He had an interesting life himself and I would love to see him star in his own novel.  At this point, he is at the end of his life, and he is thinking about his sister’s legacy.  Should he leave her letters or burn them as his daughter wishes?

·       About halfway through the novel, the book takes a turn and the story goes in another direction.  I was confused at first and it took me a bit to get my bearings.

·       I loved Rupert Graves as the narrator.  He was an entertaining narrator and I loved his voice.

·       I have enjoyed every Natalie Jenner novel I’ve read, but I would rate this one as my favorite with The Jane Austen Society.

Overall, Austen at Sea by Natalie Jenner is a beautiful and extraordinary story with unforgettable characters.  I loved the look into the lives of Austen fans in the 19^th century when Austen’s family is still alive.  I also liked the discussion of women’s rights.

Are you a fan of classic movies?  I love classic movies and could watch them all day if I had the time.  Time seems to be a problem for me lately with my oldest son near high school graduation and us deciding to redo our hardwood floors.

Every Time We Say Goodbye is the story of Vivian Lowry.  In 1955, she wrote a play that audiences loved, but critics loathed.  Following the recommendations of friends, Vivian travels to Italy where she works as a script doctor on a movie.  She also uses her time there to investigate the disappearance of her fiancé during WWII.  Flashbacks also tell the story of “La Scolaretta”, a schoolgirl who is also an assassin during WWII.  How are these two stories related?

My thoughts on this novel:

·       With my hectic schedule, I once again found it best to review this book as both an audiobook and a physical book.  It worked well.  Juliet Aubrey was a soothing narrator.

·       I felt immersed in 1950s Italy in this novel and loved the details of movie making in Italy during this time period.  It was fun when real life actors, such as Sophia Loren and Ava Gardner, made an appearance.

·       This is the third novel in The Jane Austen Society series, but the series is very loosely related.  Vivian is a character in the previous books, and in this novel, she gets her own story.  Other characters pop back up as well.  It’s fun if you’ve read the previous two books, but this book can very much be a standalone novel.

·       I thought it was interesting exploring how the Catholic Church was involved with the making of the movies during this time.  It was much more involved than I thought. 

·       I didn’t know how the two storylines were connected for a long time while reading this novel, but they came together beautifully at the end.

·       This was a thoughtful look at love and loss, how to best remember someone when they are gone, and how to move on from that loss.

·       I had a harder time engaging with the characters in this novel than I did in the previous novels. 

Favorite Quote:  “Yet in the end, goodness is fixed and steady, and not so difficult to spot.  It is evil that takes a bewildering number of forms and keeps changing its shape, tricking you with false promises and reasoning, taunting you into resignation.”

Overall, Every Time We Say Goodbye was a well written novel that gives the reader an immersive experience of 1950s filmmaking in Italy as well as a thoughtful look at how WWII impacted the people of that time.

Hello Dear Readers,

Every Time We Say Goodbye was the hardest book I will ever write, and the most rewarding.

It all started when I learned about the world-famous Cinecittà movie studio in Rome being used as a war refugee camp in the 1940s. People who had been stripped of everything—homes, possessions, even their most basic humanity—suddenly found themselves confined to life inside a “dream factory.” I decided to set my third novel during a very specific, very cool time in history—la dolce vita of mid 1950s Rome—while exploring the incredibly complex and haunting legacy of that city under German occupation during the Second World War.

I also wanted to know why Vivien Lowry, a character from my book Bloomsbury Girls, had been so angry all the time! I wondered if a woman could make the biggest mistake of her life and move past the regret in a way that benefitted her and the world around her. I never intended to write a dual timeline. I had been working on Every Time We Say Goodbye for nearly a year when the voice of a young female Italian resistance fighter codenamed la scolaretta—the schoolgirl assassin—suddenly showed up on the page one day. Having witnessed the bravery and sacrifice of so many to keep us safe during our world’s most recent challenge, I wanted to pay tribute to them. How fortunate am I, through the intimate and emotional power of historical fiction, to have the opportunity to do so.

I packed everything I could into this book: love and conflict, faith and religion, censorship and resistance, art and moviemaking, fashion and food, and cameos by favorite actresses such as Sophia Loren and Ava Gardner and characters from both The Jane Austen Society and Bloomsbury Girls (I, myself am terrible at goodbyes!).

Do things always needs to stay the same because that is the way they’ve always been?  Three female employees of Bloomsbury Books in post-WWII London are starting to think that they could be the change for good to help sales at their store.  The store has been strictly run by men, tradition, and a dusty set of rules. Will Vivien, Grace, and Evie be able to change things up?

I had previously read and enjoyed The Jane Austen Society by Natalie Jenner.  Bloomsbury Girls has Evie Stone as a main character who was previously in The Jane Austen Society.  It also had what I loved about that novel, great characters, story, and setting.  The setting was in a book shop and there was a lot of talk about books.  I loved it.  Even better is when really life author, Daphne Du Maurier gives an author talk at the store and becomes a character in the novel.  I LOVE Daphne Du Maurier and the talk of her works and of her as a living, breathing, authoress was thrilling. 

I loved all of the characters, but especially the main female characters of Vivien, Grace, and Evie.  Vivien is a beautiful woman with ambitions to move up at the bookstore and also to become an author.  She also lost her great love during WWII and has a love / hate relationship with another employee, Alec.  Her best friend at the shop is Grace.  Grace is a married mother of two and finds that her marriage has become untenable.  She has found a comradeship with Lord Baskin, the owner of Bloomsbury books.  As his married, employee from a different social class, what future can that hold?  Evie Stone has gone to Cambridge and has become employed at Bloomsbury Books as she is on the hunt for a rare historically significant book written by a female author.  As she gets settled in, she becomes friends with her co-worker Ash.  Will they become more than friends?  Will Evie find the rare book and if so, what will she do with it?

I enjoyed the story as the women have to decide what they want in life and how to move forward.  I also loved the discussion of women authors and rare books.  I loved that characters from The Jane Austen Society were woven throughout the text as well.  You can definitely read this as a stand alone novel, but it’s a fun treat for those that have read both books.

I listened to the audiobook narrated by Juliet Stevenson.  Juliet Stevenson was Mrs. Elton in the 1996 version of Emma.  I enjoyed her portrayal as Mrs. Elton, and I have enjoyed her narration of audiobooks in the past.  She does another great job with Bloomsbury Girls giving a unique voice to the characters. 

Overall, Bloomsbury Girls is a gentle story with fascinating characters and setting in 1950s England.  I loved it.

I have wonderful news to share today.  Author Natalie Jenner has a great new historical fiction novel, Bloomsbury Girls, ready to be published on May 17, 2022.  I'm happy to share all that I know about this new novel and reveal the beautiful cover.
