Three Queens by Rebecca Connolly

Are you in a May flower season where you live?  Flowers are blooming in Northeast Wisconsin, but it is still very chilly.

Three extraordinary women formed a friendship in the late 18th century:  Abigail Adams of the United States, Queen Charlotte of England, and Marie Antoinette of France.  With limited power and many problems both personnel and on the world stage, how will these ladies navigate life and support one another?

My thoughts on this novel:

·       This is a book that is meant to be read slowly and savored.

·       Each chapter starts with quotes from fiction letters to each other. The POV of each chapter alternatives between the three ladies.

·       Abigail Adam was the wife of future president John Adams who before he was president served as the ambassador to France and England.  She misses home and feels like a fish out of water at times.

·       Marie Antoinette is a scapegoat in France as the country descends into revolution.

·       Queen Charlotte deals with a problematic oldest son, her husband’s descent into madness, and the loss of her children.

·       These three women were in high positions but didn’t have much power to change their own fates.  They were able to find the strength to make what changes they would with what they had.

·       Great research with a bibliography at the end.

·       There are good discussion questions for book clubs at the end of the book.

·       The afterword explains what happened to Abigail and Charlotte after Marie Antoinette’s death.

Favorite Quotes:

“What was left for her after accomplishing those things?  She had influence but no power.  She had position but no authority.  She had plenty of finery but no lasting significance.”

“Their friendship lived and breathed in a way that human life did not.  It surpassed mortal bonds and physical distance.  It remained unharmed by wars, but loss, but fear, or by hate.”

Three Queens by Rebecca Connolly is a beautifully written historical fiction novel about three extraordinary women in history.

Mayhem on the Marzipan Express by Rebecca Connolly (Great Reads Book Promotion Tour)

Have you ever taken a trip on a train?  My Mom put together a trip around ten years ago from Michigan to Chicago with the grandkids.  It was a lot of fun.  I would like to travel by train more!

Claire Walker was previously on Britain’s Battle of the Bakers cooking competition.  She did not win the competition but did catch the attention of famous chef Alan Gables and the love of Jonathan Ainsley.  Claire and Jonathan are taking a train trip across Scotland with Claire serving as Alan’s sous chef.  The historic steam train has been renamed “The Marzipan Express” and is full of Alan’s fans for a unique celebrity experience.  Shortly after the journey starts, a passenger is found murdered.  The passengers also find themselves stranded with mechanical problems with the train. Will Claire be able to solve the mystery before the murderer strikes again?

My thoughts on this novel:

·       This the second book in the “A Claire Walker Mystery” series.  I read it as a standalone and it worked.  It did really make me want to go back and read the first book.

·       I enjoyed the cooking details and wanted to eat the treats.  Recipes are included at the end of the book.

·       It reminded me of the classic Agatha Christie tale, Murder on the Orient Express.

·       I loved the Scottish setting.

·       Claire had some insecurities in her relationship with Jonathan, but I enjoyed their growing romance.

·       This was a clean read.

·       It was also a cozy read and perfect for winter.

·       I loved the dedication to David Tennant at the start of the book.  Now I really want to see a TV movie starring David Tennant as Alan!!

·       There are also good discussion questions included at the end that can be used with a bookclub.

Overall, Mayhem on the Marzipan Express by Rebecca Connolly was a very fun cozy mystery with great characters, great setting, and a touch of romance.

A Carol for Mrs. Dickens by Rebecca Connolly (Austenprose PR Book Tour)

What is your favorite Christmas novel or short story?  A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens is one of my favorites and I read it most years for Christmas.

Set in the Christmas of 1851, Catherine Dickens is struggling as she hosts Christmas parties, raises eight children, mourns the loss of a child, and is expecting another child.  She feels she has lost the spirit of Christmas.  She talks with a cook who reminds her that Christmas can be a time of miracles and magic.  Afterwards, she finds herself living through Christmases of the past to once again rediscover the true meaning of Christmas.  Will she rediscover her faith and love for Christmas?

My thoughts on this book:

·       This was a short, quick read.

·       It included beautiful Victorian illustrations.  I loved them and it really added to the ambiance of the book.

·       I loved the descriptions of food and entertaining during Victorian times.

·       The character of Charles Dickens was fantastically drawn.

·       I really liked the faith message with the true meaning of Christmas – Christ’s birth.  It was a good reminder for us all in the hustle and bustle of Christmas to remember the true meaning of the season.

·       This is a perfect story for anyone that loves a good historical Christmas novel or has enjoyed watching The Man who Invented Christmas, A Christmas Carol, or Victoria.

Overall, A Carol for Mrs. Dickens by Rebecca Connolly is a delightful holiday read that reminds us of the true meaning of Christmas.

Her Country Gentleman by Sian Ann Bessey, Sarah M. Eden, and Rebecca Connolly (Austenprose PR Book Tour)

Her Country Gentleman is part of the Timeless Georgian Collection.  This is my first read of that collection and I greatly enjoyed it.  With all that is going on in the world right now, it was nice to sit down and read these gentle romances set in the Georgian time period.  The collection has three novellas.  They all have a theme that includes sheep and a young lady on a journey.  It was a perfect springtime collection.

In Spring at Tibbley Hall by Sian Ann Bessey, Charlotte has gone on a trip with her Grandmamma to Tibbley Hall.  Once there, she meets a man she mistakenly takes for a farm hand who is caring for the sheep.  She learns that it is William, Lord Cheston, the master of the estate.  His mother and her grandmother were determined that they meet.  Will they find love?

In Love of My Heart, Cordelia Wakefield’s family has had to retrench and leave London for Scotland.  How will she find a husband without a season?  In Scotland, she meets the home farmer and his pet lamb.  She is enamored, but her parents are not.  When she discovers that he is the heir to the castle, will her parents and his grandfather come around to their relationship?

In Miss Smith goes to Wiltshire, Martha Smith is visiting her relative in Wiltshire to learn the error of her ways.  Her mother is very upset that she will not marry the men that she approves of and wants her daughter to marry.  Martha just wants to have a happy and unpretentious life.  When she meets a farmer, who ends up really being a poor Earl, will she be able to find her own happy ending?

I loved all three stories.  You can read them individually or read the entire book in one sitting.  I read through this quickly myself and enjoyed it.  It is a clean romance. The Georgian period is right before the Regency period, and I was amused by the different styles (wigs and a lot more going on with the dresses).

Favorite Quote:

“There is much of grandeur to be found in London, but hardly substance.  At least not in my circles.  One does get so tired of ceremony and gored with pretense.  Everybody is playing a part, and one is always on display.”

Overall, Her Country Gentleman is a sweet collection of novellas that is perfect for spring.

BOOK DESCRIPTION

Her Country Gentleman is the first book in the Timeless Georgian Collection, a new anthology series from Mirror Press. The book features three novellas from bestselling historical romance authors whose stories reveal that not all love is found in London.

“Spring at Tribbley Hall,” by Sian Ann Bessey

When Charlotte's grandmother invites her to accompany her to Norfolk, Charlotte jumps at the chance to visit the sea and escape the fuss surrounding her sister's wedding preparations in London. Lord William Cheston, on the other hand, is most unhappy when his mother informs him that her old friend and a granddaughter are coming to stay. Not only is it lambing season, but he's also dealing with the mysterious loss of several sheep. The last thing he needs is a child underfoot. When Charlotte and William first meet, he does not realize that the lovely young lady is the granddaughter in question, and she assumes that the man dressed in work clothes in the barn is a servant. Soon afterward, however, Charlotte stumbles upon a clue to William's sheep's disappearance, and when her life is placed in jeopardy, William is forced to choose between saving his unwanted houseguest and catching the thief.

“Love of My Heart,” by Sarah M. Eden

Cordelia Wakefield has never lived anywhere but London and is not overly happy when her family is forced to retrench to a small estate near Teviotbrae, Scotland. An ill-fated game of battledore and shuttlecock brings her face-to-racquet with Sebastian, who runs the home farm at nearby Teviot Castle. What begins as a clash of personalities, expectations, and preferences, soon leads to a friendship neither had expected. As the magic of Teviotbrae weaves its spell, the possibility of something more than friendship begins to blossom. But what future is there for a lowly farmer and a London lady?

“Miss Smith Goes to Wiltshire,” by Rebecca Connolly

Martha Smith wants to marry for love and will not be persuaded otherwise. She is highly sought after in Society for her beauty and status but refuses to consider any suitor whose only claim is that his prospects meet with her mother's approval. Her widowed mother has had enough of Martha's romantic sensibilities and is sending her to stay with unfortunate cousins in Wiltshire to show her that marrying for love is a risk that is too great. Benjamin Steele, Lord Hillier, is working on his new and dilapidated estate when he first catches sight of the striking Martha Smith. Becoming Lord Hillier has only brought him a house that needs significant repairs, tenant farms that had been abandoned, and only the money he'd already possessed. He wants meaning in his life, and he's more than willing to work for it. Though worlds apart in all else, on this point they can agree: a life of meaning would change everything.
