Danger at Darkmoor Park by Syrie James (Austenprose PR Book Tour)

Do you make book predictions? How often do they come true?

Selena Taylor is happy to help host a Christmas house party at Darkmoor Park.  When a guest mysteriously dies during a snowstorm, everyone is trapped inside.  Dr. Adrian Scott arrives during the blizzard and helps investigate what appears to be a murder.  Will they be able to solve the crime, and will they be able to resolve the feelings between them?

My thoughts on this novel:

·       Gothic Christmas historical romance is a subgenre that I absolutely love.

·       This is the third book in the Audacious Sisterhood of Smoke and Fire Series.  I loved all three books in this series.

·       I enjoyed that this novel took place during the Christmas season.  A Christmas house party is a perfect setting for a mystery.

·       This was a cozy mystery that kept me guessing until the end.

·       I liked the tension and romance between Selena and Dr. Scott, although I kept wondering if Dr. Scott could be the killer at times.  They had great chemistry between them.

·       I enjoyed the references to Jane Austen.

·       Serena is a great heroine.  She is a strong intelligent woman that runs a school with her sister.  She is also the heiress to Mrs. Hillman.  I loved the relationship between Serena and Mrs. Hillman.

·       I would love this series to continue with all the sisters and their husbands.

Overall, Danger at Darkmoor Park was an engaging Gothic Christmas historical romance and mystery.  I loved this story as a standalone and loved the series of three books overall. I highly recommend the entire series.

The Secrets of Thorndale Manor by Syrie James (Austenprose PR Book Tour)

Which author you would recommend everyone?  I have read and continue to enjoy novels by author Syrie James and I would recommend her to anyone.

Athena Taylor and her sister Selena have realized their dream of opening a school for young ladies at Thorndale Manor.  The manor has a checkered past with a recent occupant having been put to death for murdering a neighbor.  When one of their maids is discovered dead, Athena discovers that she was also linked with the past murder.  She decides to investigate the maids murder as well as the past murder.  What will she discover?

My thoughts on this novel:

·       This novel picked up right after the first novel in the series, The Mysteries of Pendowar Hall.  I greatly enjoyed this novel.  You can read The Secrets of Thorndale Manor as a standalone novel, but it is even more fun to read the series in order.

·       I love historical mystery and I thought this was a really interesting mystery and suspense novel.  It had a gothic feel to the entire story as well, which I loved.  I don’t want to delve into the details and ruin it for others, but I enjoyed the twists and turns.

·       I also felt hints of Jane Eyre throughout the novel and there is a lovely author’s note in the end which discusses this as well.  I especially loved that Athena and Selena are working together to run a school for girls and are having a hard time getting students.  This seemed familiar as it was a dream of Charlotte Bronte as well to start a school and her and her sisters were also unable to get enough students to do so.

·       I loved the Victorian England setting.  I also liked getting to know the servants in the manor as well as the neighbors in the small village.

·       Ian Vernon is an architect. His family had previously owned Thorndale Manor, but he had to sell it due to the estate being so far in debt.  He is not happy about Athena investigating the old murder as his sister was convicted of it.   But as he gets to know Athena, sparks fly. I loved this romance.

·       The back of the book has a picture of the beautiful cover of the next book in the series, Danger at Darkmoor Park which will focus on Selena. I can’t wait to read it!

Overall, The Secrets of Thorndale Manor by Syrie James is an intriguing Victorian Gothic historical mystery and suspense novel.  It has great characters and a great story with many twists and turns.  I highly recommend it!

The Mysteries of Pendowar Hall by Syrie James (Austenprose PR Book Tour)

What genre is your comfort read?  One of my favorite types of comfort reads is Gothic romantic suspense.

Governess Diana Taylor has been sent by her Godmother to Pendowar Hall in Cornwall to teach her Godmother’s niece, Emma Fallbrook, and to investigate the mystery of her Godmother’s brother’s (the former Baronet’s) death.  The new owner of the estate is the former baronet’s nephew, Captain William Fallbrook.  The Captain is home recovering from a wound.  He is handsome and charismatic, but it’s rumored he has a woman in every port.  Is he all that he seems?  What is the mermaid’s curse, and did it cause the previous baronet’s death?

My thoughts on this novel:

·       I liked how Diana was a caring governess and helped her ward Emma build her confidence by trying to figure out the facts behind the death of her father as well as help her with her learning disability.  Diana was a strong woman and kept on working on solving the mystery, while helping others and finding romance for herself.  I always enjoy stories that involve governesses.

·       The Captain was an intriguing and mysterious romantic figure.

·       I loved all the references to Jane Eyre.  The entire novel had a Jane Eyre vibe to it, but I especially loved the meeting of Diana and the Captain.  It reminded me so much of the meeting between Jane Eyre and Mr. Rochester.

·       The cover of this novel is beautiful.  Blue is my favorite color.

·       This is the first novel in the new series – The Audacious Sisterhood of the Smoke and Fire.  I like the series title.  I can’t wait for the next book. I also hope that Diana and her sisters will be able to start their own school as they planned.

·       I loved the mysteries and the gothic romance.  It was a great escapism read and reminded me of some of my favorite authors in this genre including Daphne Du Maurier, Victoria, Holt, and Mary Stewart.

·       This was a clean read.  The book had a good romance, but mostly focused on the mystery.

·       This novel had a great setting.  I always love mysterious manors on the coast of Cornwall.

Overall, The Mysteries of Pendowar Hall by Syrie James was a riveting start to a great new series with a captivating Gothic romantic suspense mystery.

Duke Darcy’s Castle by Syrie James (Review Round-up by Austenprose)

Times are tense in the outside world, but Duke Darcy’s Castle was the perfect book to curl up to with a cup of hot cocoa and be carried away by the story.

Kathryn Atherton wants to be the first woman architect in Victorian era England.  She has completed the work to earn the degree, but it was not granted.  She has also taken the exam to become a licensed Architect, but she is awaiting the results.  Her firm has sent her to St. Gabriel’s Mount to work on renovations to the castle.  St. Gabriel’s Mount is a castle located on an island off of Cornwall that is only assessible by land during low tide.  When she arrives, she is surprised to learn that the man who hired her has passed away and his brother, Lance Granville, has recently returned from the navy to become the 10th Duke of Darcy.  Kathryn strives to complete her job as a professional, but she can not deny her attraction to Lance.  Will she choose her career or love?

Lance loved being the Captain of his own ship in the Navy and never thought he would take his brother’s place as the Duke of Darcy.  He is stunned to learn that the estate is mortgaged to the hilt and he is about to lose it.  He is also stunned to learn that his brother hired an architect and that the architect is a woman.  What was his brother thinking with their lack of money?  Lance decides to continue the project and finds that he loves Kathryn’s ideas and also finds himself very much attracted to her.  When he learns that Kathryn is an heiress and her fortune could save his estate, what will he do?

I greatly enjoyed this novel.  It was a perfect escapism read.  I loved Kathryn and Lance as characters.  I was particularly taken with Kathryn’s struggle to be a licensed architect.  It infuriated me when her accomplishments were not taken seriously as a female architect and she was barred from receiving her degree and licensure.  I really enjoyed the note at the end of the novel that described the real historical struggles of female architects as they tried to be taken as serious professionals in the world.  As a female engineer, I really related to this storyline, although I was a hundred years later.  I loved that Lance respected Kathryn as a professional besides also being attracted to her as a woman.

This novel does have steamy scenes.  It is the third novel in the Dare to Defy series.  I’ve read the previous two novels, but this one can stand alone.

Favorite Quotes:

“To succeed in my profession, I will need to work twice as hard as any man.”

Overall, Duke Darcy’s Castle was a perfect escapism historical romance novel and I was especially intrigued by the heroine’s journey as a female architect.
