Do you have a favorite story that involves forgiveness?  The Hiding Place by Carrie Ten Boom is one of my favorites and this book, These Empty Places by Sarah Loudin Thomas was another great story of forgiveness.

These Empty Places by Sarah Loudin Thomas is a story of two women.  One woman, Claire Roth, is a widow in her 40s that has a second chance of love.  Will she take it?  The other woman is Lena Hawkins, a socialite who married a man of lower social standing.  When things do not go as planned in either of their lives, will these two woman be able to help one another?

My thoughts on this book:

·       I read and enjoyed this book in May and I’m finally getting my review posted.

·       This story was set in North Carolina in the 1930s.

·       I loved the imagery of the dam bursting at the start of the novel and a woman waiting for years with the belief that the lake she loves will be refilled.

·       There is a mystery in the story of Claire’s first true love who she didn’t marry, but who threw a box with an item in it that was important to starting their life together, in the lake.  Does this box still exist?  What is in it?

·       Claire hires Lena to be her assistant, but also to be a new librarian for the library she wants to build.

·       Claire’s daughter contracts polio and it is a good reminder of how terrifying it was before the polio vaccine. 

·       Lena’s husband Preston is a speculator which is how they lost their money.  When he starts to perhaps be involved in underground deals, what will Lena do?

·       The story really shines in the second half with a theme of forgiveness and of moving on in life from past hurts.

·       What is important in life?  Chasing treasure or appreciating what you have?

·       There is also a great theme of pursuing your own dreams.  What makes you happy and fulfilled versus what you are told should make you happy.

·       This book could be classified as a second chance romance, later in life romance, inspirational, dual POV, and friendship novel.

·       I loved how Claire helped so many people.

·       This was great on audiobook and kept me entertained.  I enjoyed narrator Pilar Witherspoon.

Overall, These Empty Places by Sarah Loudin Thomas was an inspirational book of forgiveness, love, friendship, and chasing your own dreams.  It was a lovely story.

Don’t Upstage the Body by Naomi Stephens

 

What is the weather like by you?  We’ve been hit by a heat wave in Northeast Wisconsin with temps hovering near 100 degrees Fahrenheit.  I am not a fan of this type of weather and would rather be in the cool foggy weather of England.

Hippolyta Halfpenny and her family are professional mourners.  They show up to a funeral with disguises and characters to make sure the deceased is properly mourned.  When Hippolyta discovers the undertaker’s body in the library, she inadvertently becomes an investigator as the estate is cut off from the world by a washed out road.  With the help of the new Lord Montfort, Crispin, will Hippolyta be able to solve the crime before the murderer strikes again?

My thoughts on this novel:

·       This novel is set in 1957 England and has a unique and fun story.

·       This is a cozy mystery, historical mystery, and historical romance.

·       I loved the characters, especially Hippolyta and Crispin.  They had great chemistry and fun and witty banter.

·       The side characters were great as well.  I particularly liked Tula, Crispin’s sassy and eccentric American aunt.

·       This was the book I needed last week to escape from the stresses of the world.

·       This is a Christian book with light faith elements.

·       I need to read more mysteries by this author.  I loved how it was an Agatha Christie type mystery.

·       It was a satisfying mystery – I did not guess the ending!

Overall, Don’t Upstage the Body by Naomi Stephens was a very engaging novel, and I did not want to put it down. I haven’t felt this invested in a story in a long time!

What is your favorite book that features friendship?

With Enduring Tides by Jane Kirkpatrick is a character driven story featuring many different complicated characters with interesting stories that is set in a beautiful location on the Oregon Coast.  It is based on real-life historical figures.  The story is mainly focused on Mary Gerritse, a woman trying to keep her family together while also searching for her own identity.  She delivers mail on horseback and has let her oldest daughter, Belle, stay with her grandparents.  When death and disaster hits the family, how will they make it through?

My thoughts on this novel:

·       There was an entire community of complicated characters that supported Mary and her family that had their own interesting stories.  I loved the friendships between these characters.

·       Who are you when you find out your parents lied to you your entire life?

·       Who stands by you when hard times hit?

·       This was a great story of women living on the frontier and how they make it work through a variety of tragedies.

·       Trigger warning:  R%^e.

·       The story was set in a beautiful location on the Oregon coast.

·       This is the second in the series, The Women of Cannon Beach, but it works as a standalone.

·       This book is set in the early 1900s.

·       It is based on real life historical figures that have been meticulously researched.  Mary Gerritse was a real-life woman who did deliver mail on horseback.

·       I like how the story showed both the highs and the lows of living on the frontier.

·       It includes indigenous people who lived in the area when the settlers arrived.

·       I read the first half of the physical book and listened to the second half on audiobook.  I enjoyed reading it both ways. 

Overall, With Enduring Tides by Jane Kirkpatrick is an interesting historical fiction novel with great complicated characters, interesting stories, and a beautiful Oregon coast setting.  With the 250^th anniversary of the United States around the corner, this is a perfect read to celebrate our history!

Do you have a favorite type of dog?  I love all dogs.  As an adult, my family and I have had a keeshond, beagle, and two mutts.  We have a pure breed and a rescue mutt usually at the same time.  I heartily approve of the addition of dogs to any story.

Charlie Boardman is walking his beloved dog, Ruby, in the small English town of Framstone, when they stumble across a corpse.  Charlie and his group of fellow dogwalkers investigate this case.  When a second body shows up and Charlie begins to receive threats, things get much more serious.  Will Charlie and the dogwalkers be able to solve this mystery?

My thoughts on this book:

·       There were nice short chapters which were easy to read. 

·       I started by reading the physical book, but I switched to the audiobook as I didn’t have much time this month to read the physical book at night.  I enjoyed the narrator and the book equally as a physical book or audiobook.

·       I liked the Hercule Poirot references in the story.

·       I enjoyed the concept, and it makes sense to me that dogwalkers would discover murder victims and would be in tune with the happenings in their village.

·       There was a great climax and conclusion in this story and a surprise twist at the end.

·       Charlie Boardman was a great main character.  He was a nice guy that can’t keep his nose out of solving this mystery.  I love his Staffordshire bull terrier, Ruby, who helps him with his investigation.

·       This was a debut novel.  I loved the world of the coastal English town and the great characters and would enjoy reading another novel in this series.  I looked it up and was excited to see there will be a second book called Death at a Dog Hotel.  I can’t wait to read it!

·       I loved the puns and jokes throughout the novel.  This was a fun book.

Overall, The Dogwalkers’ Detective Agency by Michael Hogan was a very enjoyable cozy mystery with great characters, setting, story, and dogs.  I can’t wait for the next book!

The Manhattan Confessions by Jocelyn Green

 

What catches your eye on book covers?  I loved the blue dress of the character on the cover of The Manhattan Confessions by Jocelyn Green.  I thought it was very striking and eye catching.

Ivy Malone works for the New York historical society as a librarian.  Society matron, Adeline King, reveals her history to Ivy in order to preserve it.  When this explosive story gets published without Ivy’s approval, two men appear and say they have claims to Adeline and want to know her true identify.  Are these men telling the truth and how can Ivy keep Adeline safe?

Ivy is also having problems with her cousin Gina as she tried to immigrate from Italy.  She is detained at Ellis Island and Ivy employs the help of immigrant services to help get the paperwork issues solved.  As difficulties arise, who can she trust?

My thoughts on this project:

·       This story is set in the 1920’s in New York City.

·       I loved the deep look into immigration problems of the 1920s, many which still exist today.  People tried to keep the Italians out as they were the unwanted immigrants of the time. They take advantage of the immigrants to make money off them directly or by forcing them into prostitution.

·       There was a great overarching theme – do you believe that people can change to be better people?  Do you deserve forgiveness after a life of crime?

·       This is the last book in the “On Central Park” series but can be read as a standalone.  Each book is the story of a roommate.  Characters from the previous books appear.

·       I liked Gina’s story escaping from fascist Italy.

·       I really enjoyed the great multilayered characters in this story.

·       There was a great romance in the book between Ivy and Tom as well as mystery and suspense.

·       This was a clean read and inspirational.

·       It really showed the power of friendship and family.

·       This was one of my favorite reads in April.

·       There are great discussion questions at the end for book clubs.

·       There was also a great author’s note at the end on the real historical details and the sites one can visit in New York City that are in the book.

Overall, The Manhattan Confessions by Jocelyn Green was an inspiring historical fiction novel about second chances.  I enjoyed it and highly recommend it.

Not Precisely Mr. Knightley by Carolyn Miller

 

What literary hero would you like to meet?

Emma-Jane (EJ) Bennett and Jordan Knight are life long best friends.  When EJ quits her job to work full time on her dating app, Dream Match, Jordan is happy for her but misses working with her.  As he realizes his feelings are more than friendship, will EJ come to the same conclusion?  Especially with the handsome and rich Eric Churchill turning her head…

My thoughts on this novel:

·       This is the second book in the Silver Teapot series.  I loved the first book in this series and can’t wait to see what happen next.  The next book, Not Very Sensible, comes out in October 2026.

·       Just like her inspiration, Jane Austen’s Emma, EJ frustrated me greatly at time with her decisions.  She was a very driven person which I related to.

·       Jordan was an honest guy, and he tries to get EJ to do better.  I like that he admits to his mistakes and asks for forgiveness.

·       I loved all the Austen references in this book.

·       This is a Christian and inspirational contemporary romance.

·       I enjoyed the Australia setting.

·       I liked the over arching theme of what is important in life?  Friends and Family?  Riches and knowing rich and famous people? 

Overall, Not Precisely Mr. Knightley by Carolyn Miller was an entertaining contemporary romance with Jane Austen flair.  I enjoyed it.

Do you have a cause that you believe in?  I have many, but a lifelong cause I have is to promote engineering to youth and to help increase the number of women in engineering.

Noreen O’Sullivan firmly believes in the temperance cause.  When she is invited to join the Secret Society of Spinsters, she hopes she will be able to rally others to her cause to close the local tavern.  Not everyone is town is happy about this, and Deputy James Paxton is often called in to keep the peace.  Noreen and the Deputy are at odds at first, but soon sparks fly.  Will these two be able to find love?  Will Noreen be able to shut down the tavern?

My thoughts on this novel:

·       I loved the discussion of favorite books including Little Women.

·       It was interesting to think about “spinster” ladies and how they could be devoted to a cause back then, like temperance, and work together for a change for the greater good.

·       I was not sure about Noreen’s crusade at first, but as she described her abuse by her alcoholic father and his early death, it made sense that she wanted to shut it own.  The cruel violent beating of her friend in a similar circumstance was horrifying.

·       I loved Deputy James Paxton and how he is always trying to do with is right for the community. He was caring and empathetic man.  I also liked how he investigated a crime at the end and was able to put together all the clues.  I also loved how he was able to change his viewpoint as he emphasized with people.

·       I was call this enemies to friends to lovers book.

·       This was a western frontier historical romance set in Albany Texas in 1894.  It was a clean romance and a Christian read.

·       The point of view would switch between Noreen and James.

·       I loved Noreen and James’s relationship and the growth of both characters throughout the novel.

·       The audiobook was interesting with a good narrator. 

·       There are great discussion questions at the end of the book for a book club to use.

·       This is the first book in a new series, The Secret Society of Spinsters.  I am looking forward to continuing to read this series.  An exciting excerpt of the next book in the series is included at the end of this book.

Overall, Taming Lady Temperance by Karen Witemeyer was a good western historical romance that had an interesting spin with the temperance and spinster women topics.

Mists Over the Channel Islands by Sarah Sundin

 

If you could choose a group of fictional friends, which characters would be a part of your group?  I would love to have the group of fictional friends and family found in Mists Over the Channel Islands by Sarah Sundin.

Dr. Ivy Picot is a new practicing doctor when her father, mother, and other family members evacuate Jersey island for England.  She stays behind with her sister and brother to help keep the family practice afloat during the German occupation of the Island during WWII.  She meets and is attracted to Dutch Civil Engineer Gerrit van der Zee, but as he works for the Nazis, she knows they cannot be together.  As the years pass, Ivy realizes that everyone must chose a side.  Will she side with the resistance or with the Nazis?

My thoughts on this novel:

·       Mists Over the Channel Islands by Sarah Sundin is a very engaging story.  I read this book quickly and greatly enjoyed it.

·       I enjoyed that characters from Midnight on the Scottish Shore by Sarah Sundin made an appearance at the end of the novel.  I loved that book!

·       The setting was a unique and integral part of the story.  The Island seemed beautiful, but it was slowly marred by the concrete structures built by the Nazis to reinforce the island.  There was a great author’s note at the end that states that there are tours of some of the structures mentioned in the book.  I love to visit Jersey and see these structures!

·       I was sad to learn that all the diabetics on the island really did die due to lack of insulin.  The rations and doing without were very hard during the occupation on an island.  They only received five ounces of meat for an entire week!

·       The chemistry between Ivy and Gerritt was alive.  They were attracted to each other but couldn’t show it.

·       Ivy and her sister Fern’s relationship seemed very realistic.  Fern is the older sister and can’t accept that as the doctor, Ivy is the boss.

·       I didn’t know why Fern wouldn’t have left the island with her husband and sons.

·       I loved that Gerritt was a civil engineer.  I am an environmental engineer, and my husband is a civil engineer.  It makes sense that he would be the perfect person for espionage to get plans to the allies.

·       This was a clean read with Christian content.  The main characters struggle with finding the path that God wants them to follow, and how to treat all people with empathy and compassion when it is not allowed by the authorities.

·       There are great book club questions at the end.  This would be a good read for a book club that enjoys WWII fiction

·       I also enjoyed the excerpt at the end of the new Christmas WWII novella by Sarah Sundin at the end as well. It will be realized this fall and looks great.  I can’t wait – I love Christmas historical fiction!

Overall, Mists Over the Channel Islands by Sarah Sundin was an engrossing WWII historical romance with a unique setting, story, and characters.  It was a very enjoyable read!

Marrying the Matchmaker by Jody Hedlund

 

Do you like stories that feature a matchmaker?  Do you wish that matchmakers were more of a thing in modern day society?

Zaira is the middle child in the Shanahan family, and she dreams of becoming a published author.  She keeps this dream from her family, but when she involves herself in a scandal by asking local matchmaker Bellamy McKenna to kiss her so she will know how to write about it, her life is about to change.  Zaira and Bellamy are forced into an engagement to cover up the scandal.  Will these two fall in love?  Will they be able to help those in need in their community?

My thoughts on this novel:

·       I enjoyed this novel’s setting in St. Louis, Missouri in 1849.

·       There is a spark and great chemistry between the two leads, Zaira and Bellamy.

·       This historical romance has the fake relationship and friends to lovers’ tropes. There was great tension with the fake romance, but with each kiss, real feelings would form.

·       The story was told through Zaira and Bellamy’s point of views in alternating chapters.  I loved how these two characters could be themselves with each other.

·       This novel is the conclusion to the “A Shanahan Match” series.  I wish this series could continue.

·       I loved the look into the Irish community in St. Lous and Irish matchmaking.  My Great-Great Grandparents came from Ireland.  At this point in time, the Irish are immigrating to S. Louis because the potato famine and are living in terrible conditions.  Zaira and Bellamy help a pair of orphans.

·       The McKennnas as a matchmaking family are good at making matches for others, but not for themselves which has made Bellamy hesitant to match with Zaira.

·       Cholera is spreading through St. Louis, which is scary at the time, especially as they didn’t know what caused it.  They thought it might be in the malt used to make beer or in the air as a miasma.  Unfortunately, they didn’t realize it was contaminated drinking water.

·       There was some action and tension towards the end of the book where the two main characters find themselves inadvertently mixed up in a bank robbery.

·       This book was a clean and inspiring read.  It focused on a theme of telling the truth.

Favorite Quote:

“Was it because she cared more about what people thought of her and pleasing them than doing what was right and pleasing to God?”  - This was an interesting and very thoughtful quote.

Overall, Marrying the Matchmaker by Jody Hedlund was a quick read and a very romantic historical romance.  I enjoyed this book, and it was a great read for the Valentine’s season.

Beyond the Clouds by Elizabeth Camden

 

Are you addicted to a particular genre, or you read all sort of genres?  I am addicted to historical fiction, but I do like to read all sorts of genres.

Delia and Finn fell in love as teenagers at an orphanage.  Their romance ended when Finn left with Delia’s savings.  Now, years later, Finn has returned to the United States after flying with the Lafayette Escadrille in France to help in WWI before the United States has entered the war.  They are forced to work together to raise funds for Belgian refugees.  Will Delia and Finn be able to put aside differences and find love again?

My thoughts on this novel:

·       I love aviation and enjoyed the discussions about Finn’s flying including the specifics of  his plane and famous aviators from that time period.

·       Delia is a pacifist and feels that Finn is a warmonger at the start of the novel.

·       Delia and Finn grew up flying kites together and dreamed of opening a kite shop until Finn steals Delia’s money.

·       I liked how the focus of the book was Delia and Finn trying to help with humanitarian efforts with Belgian refugees to help alleviate human suffering.  It was interesting to me also as an Agatha Christie fan as Hercule Poirot is a Belgian refugee from WWI in the first Agatha Christie novel, The Mysterious Affair at Style.

·       Delia and Finn also travel to Belgium in the novel and experience peril while there.

·       This was a clean read.

·       This book has the tropes of second chance romance and enemies to lovers.

·       There was a great author’s note at the end detailing the true history.  It was fascinating.

·       I loved that Herbert “Bertie” Hoover was in this book.  I didn’t realize who “Bertie” was until they said his entire name near the end of the novel.  Herbert Hoover is usually remembered as a poor president due to the Great Depression, but he was an engineer and was able to help with many humanitarian crises during his career.  I really need a biography on him.

·       Catholic faith is mentioned in throughout the novel.  There is a Catholic priest in jail with Finn in Belgium that provides hope and inspiration.  Finn and Delia grow up in a Catholic orphanage together and Mother Superior was an inspiration for them both.

·       There was a theme of forgiveness throughout the novel and realizing when you have committed a sin or error and working to overcome it.

·       This is the third and find book in the Women of Midtown trilogy.  This entire series is spectacular but can be read as standalone novels.  Characters from the books do make brief crossover appearances throughout which is fun.

·       The characters in this novel and the entire trilogy are well written and have the plus and minuses of real people.  I loved Delia and Finn.

Favorite Quotes:

“I used to love flying kites with you because I could daydream about what it would be like to soar above and beyond the clouds.  Instead of flying for joy, you do it to kill people.  You took the best of us and turned it into something hideous.”

“A wave of painful nostalgia rose in his chest.  They offered Finn shelter for six weeks, and he saw the best of humanity in them – in their generosity, in their sacrifice for each other and for their nation, and in their shared commitment.”

“In times like these, we must confront the danger, or inaction will harm our cause more than the enemy every could.”

“It seemed God made some people to be warriors, while others were destined to work quietly behind the front lines.  Both roles had their purpose, she supposed, and there was honor in each one.”

Overall, Beyond the Clouds by Elizabeth Camden is an intriguing historical romance set during WWI with great characters and empathy for those suffering during WWI.
