The Light Before Christmas by Marty Machowski

Do you have an advent wreath or calendar?  We have an advent wreath and use an old devotional with it that my husband used growing up that is for kids.  My kids still like lighting the candles at dinner even though they are teenagers.

About this Book from the Publisher: This four-week Advent family devotional by best-selling author Marty Machowski combines devotions on the theme of light and darkness with the story of eleven-year-old Mia and her grandmother as they prepare for Christmas. Grandma loves to share her faith, especially at Christmas time, and although she is blind, she can see the light of Jesus shining bright and helps Mia—and children of all ages—to do the same.

Every year, Mia loves to spend the month of December with Grandma getting ready for Christmas. This year, they read a special devotional, The Light Before Christmas, together. Machowski brings families into their devotional time, sharing the story of Christmas. Through a Bible study of light and darkness, readers will discover how the theme of light weaves its way through the Christmas story and God’s plan of salvation.

The Light Before Christmas contains thirteen devotionals—three for each of the four weeks of Advent and one more for Christmas. Each devotional includes a Scripture for the day, an object lesson, a question to discuss as a family, a song to sing together, and a prayer.

Review:   I thought it was fun to read through a new Advent devotional.  This is a good devotional for a busy family with three devotionals for each week rather than one daily.  I love that it starts with a craft – making your own Advent wreath.  If you have never done an Advent devotional before, this is a great way to set the scene and get started.

Each week of Advent starts with a story of Mia and her Grandmother.  I love that the story uses the Grandmother’s blindness to focus on how she can still feel the faith and see the light of Jesus, even thought she is blind.  It is an engaging story that teaches an important lesson.

I thought the devotionals themselves were also great ones to use as a family.  I like how they have on object, such as a lamp with a clear bulb where you can see a filament, to use as a focal point to start the introspection and the discussion.  I liked the questions too and they prompt good discussion.  My daughter loves to sing Christmas songs and I enjoyed that classics such as O Come O Come Emmanuel were included as well as a brief history of the origins of the song.  This devotional would work best with preschool and grade school kids, but it can also work through teenage years as well.

There is also a great curriculum that you can use for your church Sunday school that goes along with this devotional. This two-level (preschool and elementary) curriculum consists of  lessons  that  include  Scripture  readings,  dramas,  object  lessons, discussion questions, activity pages, crafts, and songs.”  I like that there is a script as well as printables to use for your Sunday School class.  Until recently, I led a Children’s Liturgy as my church and this would have been great to use.

Praying with Jane: 31 Days Through the Prayers of Jane Austen by Rachel Dodge (Review and Giveaway)

It’s no secret that Jane Austen is one of my favorite authors.  What many casual fans may not know is that Jane Austen was the daughter of an Anglican clergyman, Reverend George Austen, and two her brothers followed him in his vocation.  Faith was an important part of Austen’s life that was filled with prayer and reflection. Three works of Austen’s that I have never read, are three prayers that she wrote.  Praying with Jane takes a contemplative look through these three prayers.  The book is broken up into three sections with 10 days for each prayer, and then a final day on the Lord’s prayer.

Each section starts with a printing of the entire prayer, and then each day takes a line or a few lines and breaks them down.  In each day you get a look into how the line applied to Jane’s life or to the lives of her characters in her novels.  For instance, the book discusses Captain Wentworth and Anne Elliot when it discusses devotion and Emma Woodhouse when discussing the need for repentance. It then relates these moments to our everyday life.  A few related Bible quotes are included. An invitation for prayer at the end is followed by a closing prayer for the day’s use.

I enjoyed reading through Praying with Jane and will keep it by my bed for a more leisurely read through by day as it was intended.  I really enjoyed the tidbits about Jane’s life or thoughts about the morality of the characters in her novels.  There was a great correlation on how this relates to our everyday lives and it gave me a lot of great points to ponder.  Rachel Dodge not only found a way to really analyze and think about Jane’s prayers and how they relate to her life or characters and our lives, but she also found perfect Bible quotes to go with everything.  Out of different daily prayer books I’ve read over the years and as a fan of Jane Austen, I thought Praying with Jane was a perfect book of prayer.

Favorite Quotes:

“Reading Jane’s prayers is a bit like looking into her heart.”

“We’ve all had a Box Hill moment, when we said or did something we later regretted.”

Overall, if you are a Christian fan of Jane Austen, Praying with Jane is a not to miss book that will enhance not only your prayer life, but your understanding of Jane Austen as a Christian woman.  I also really liked the message that our lives in modern times are busy, but we should take the time to pray and put our faith first as they practiced during Austen’s day.

Miracles by Karen Kingsbury Review and Giveaway!

Miracles is a book that brought a tear to my eye on more than one occasion.  It is a 52-week devotional.  It is basically 52 short stories that detail different miracles complete with Bible verses.  These stories were very, very moving and inspiring.  I summarized just a few at dinner with my family this weekend, and my kids were all riveted.

A couple of my favorite devotionals included stories of miracles that occurred for those that were struggling with being able to have children, or those whose lives were saved through miracles, and also friends and family that were separated because of misunderstandings, but then were reunited in a miraculous way.  One of my favorite stories was a doctor that came home after a long day and was stopped by a little girl that said her mother was in trouble.  The doctor went with her to her home and helped out her mother.  The mother asked how she knew she was in medical distress and the doctor responded that her daughter had told her.  The mother said that her daughter had died a few months ago.  The doctor saw the same little girl coat hanging up that the girl had worn to come and get her.  The angel of the little girl was watching over the mother and went for the doctor providing a miracle for the woman.

I also loved one explanation in the book when a woman wonders why God saved her from an accident that killed many others.  Her father replied that God has a different time for everyone to be called home to heaven and it was not her time.  I loved thinking about it like that.  Some people are just wanted in heaven sooner than others.

Overall, I loved Miracles by Karen Kingsbury.  It is a wonderful devotional about true miracles that have taken place through God that are inspiring and emotional to read.  I have a few people on my Christmas list that I am going to buy this book for!
