The Dogwalkers’ Detective Agency by Michael Hogan

Title:  The Dogwalkers’ Detective Agency

Author:  Michael Hogan

Narrated by:  Will Close

Publisher: Dreamscape Media

Length: Approximately 12 hours and 14 minutes

Source: Purchased from Audible.com with a physical book review copy from @michaelhogan100 @pegasus_books @greatreadsbookpromo.  Thank-you!

Do you have a favorite type of dog?  I love all dogs.  As an adult, my family and I have had a keeshond, beagle, and two mutts.  We have a pure breed and a rescue mutt usually at the same time.  I heartily approve of the addition of dogs to any story.

Charlie Boardman is walking his beloved dog, Ruby, in the small English town of Framstone, when they stumble across a corpse.  Charlie and his group of fellow dogwalkers investigate this case.  When a second body shows up and Charlie begins to receive threats, things get much more serious.  Will Charlie and the dogwalkers be able to solve this mystery?

My thoughts on this book:

·       There were nice short chapters which were easy to read.

·       I started by reading the physical book, but I switched to the audiobook as I didn’t have much time this month to read the physical book at night.  I enjoyed the narrator and the book equally as a physical book or audiobook.

·       I liked the Hercule Poirot references in the story.

·       I enjoyed the concept, and it makes sense to me that dogwalkers would discover murder victims and would be in tune with the happenings in their village.

·       There was a great climax and conclusion in this story and a surprise twist at the end.

·       Charlie Boardman was a great main character.  He was a nice guy that can’t keep his nose out of solving this mystery.  I love his Staffordshire bull terrier, Ruby, who helps him with his investigation.

·       This was a debut novel.  I loved the world of the coastal English town and the great characters and would enjoy reading another novel in this series.  I looked it up and was excited to see there will be a second book called Death at a Dog Hotel.  I can’t wait to read it!

·       I loved the puns and jokes throughout the novel.  This was a fun book.

Overall, The Dogwalkers’ Detective Agency by Michael Hogan was a very enjoyable cozy mystery with great characters, setting, story, and dogs.  I can’t wait for the next book!

Meet Me in Italy by Brenda Novak

What country is your current read set in?

Charlotte is having a hard time writing her second novel after the surprise success of her first novel.  She is stunned when her basketball star husband leaves her and she finds out she was an adopted child, her birth mother has died, and she has a young tween sister who is orphaned in Italy.  Charlotte and her best friend Sloane, and Sloane’s brother Julian, travel to the Amalfi Coast in Italy to meet her sister, Lily. Will Charlotte and Lily be able to have a relationship?  What will happen to Lily?

My thoughts on this novel:

·       I read this book in May for the April pick for the Brenda Novak Book Group. There are fun book club meetings on Facebook the fourth Thursday of the month.  I listen to the meetings afterwards when I can.

·       This novel was a contemporary romance and a family drama.  It also had found family and second chances.  The romance is friends to lovers.

·       I loved the description of the beautiful Amalfi Coast – I was ready to visit!

·       I felt so bad for Lily.  She had a rough life with her moving all around and constantly changing boyfriends.

·       The cover of this novel is beautiful.

·       The novel had characters dealing with heartbreak and troubles in life.  It showed how friends and found family can support you and how you can turn your life around.

·       My Great Grandma Kile would have called this a good story – it had a lot of drama, good characters, and a satisfying ending.

Overall, Meet Me in Italy by Brenda Novak was an enjoyable contemporary romance and family drama with good characters and setting.  It’s a great book if you are looking for a fun summer read.

Scent of Hope by Susan May Warren

Title:  Scent of Hope

Author:  Susan May Warren

Narrated by:  Brian Hutchison

Publisher: Recorded Books

Length: Approximately 9 hour and 57 minutes

Source: Audiobook Review copy from NetGalley and physical book review copy from @susanmaywarren @revellfiction @greatreadsbookpromo.  Thank-you!

What is the last book you read that was very entertaining?  Scent of Hope by Susan May Warren was a very entertaining story that made my yard work fly by this past weekend.

Harley Tatum is a private investigator in Alaska.  She lost her family when she was young and the one man she loved, Jericho, never returned home after enlisting in the military.  Jericho has finally returned home with his avalanche dog, Orlando, and they must work together to solve a mystery and rescue those they love.

My thoughts on this book:

·       This was great on audiobook.  Brian Hutchison was an intriguing narrator.

·       This story was action packed.

·       It is the second book in the Call of the Wild series.  I need to read the first book in the series.  This worked as a standalone.

·       This story was a second chance romance story, which is one of my favorite tropes.

·       I loved that Orlando was a Bernedoodle with a stressful back story of his own.

·       Harley is a strong woman, but she only trusts herself and won’t ask for help.

·       Jericho likes to control every situation and can’t trust that Harley has her own skills.

·       This was a good Christian and inspirational novel. There were messages about loss, grief, forgiveness, and putting your trust in God.

·       There was great chemistry and depth of feeling between Harley and Jericho.

·       This was a clean read.

Scent of Hope by Susan May Warren was a great action packed second chance romance with mystery, suspense, dogs, and a great Alaskan setting.  I highly recommend if you are looking for an entertaining read.

False Witness by Karin Slaughter

Title:  False Witness

Author:  Karin Slaughter

Narrated by:  Kathleen Early

Publisher: Blackstone Publishing

Length: Approximately 18 hour and 39 minutes

Source: Review copy from NetGalley.  Thank-you!

What book has gotten a mixed reaction in your book club lately?

False Witness was my April pick for the Rogue Book Club and it got a mixed reaction, although that is with myself being the only person that read the entire book.  One other person liked it and was almost through it, and another couldn’t get into it.  That was it for readers of this book at book club.  I am hoping the one person finished it so that we can have a good discussion about it as there was a lot to discuss in this book!

Leigh Collier is a defense attorney at a fancy law firm in Atlanta.  She is currently separated from her husband Walter, but they both work together to co-parent their beloved daughter Maddy.  One night she gets called to work on a case for a man from her past which brings up a lot of traumatic memories involving her estranged sister Callie.  Why did he come back into their lives after all this time and how can they move forward?

·       I have greatly enjoyed Karin Slaughter’s books in the past which is why I picked this book. It did have a very jarring start with a traumatic prologue involving the r%3e of a teenage girl and a murder.  This is what was very off putting to one book club member, but it was a very shocking way to start the story and made me want to figure out what the heck was going on.

·       I liked the references to one of my favorite novels, Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier.

·       This book looked into the underside of life with drugs, abuse, r%3e, etc.  It was hard topics to read about.

·       It also explored the relationships between parents and children, between sisters, and between spouses.  What would you be willing to do to save your family?

·       There was grief for past bad decisions and the life that could have been.

·       I loved Dr. Jerry.  He is an old vet who employs Callie as a vet tech.  He is so understanding and caring.  I loved when he finally let Callie know that he knew what was going on and still cared for her.

·       There were great multi layered characters in this novel.

·       It was interesting that living through the Coronavirus Pandemic with the masks, quarantine, etc. is a part of this story with the book coming out in 2021.

·       The story really made me think about justice and whether some of the bad people in this world get justice.  When is it okay to take justice into your own hands?

·       The ending was perfect.

Overall, False Witness by Karin Slaughter was a gritty thriller that delved into tough topics, justice, and what one is willing to do to project one’s family.  I couldn’t stop listening to this audiobook.

Not Precisely Mr. Knightley by Carolyn Miller

What literary hero would you like to meet?

Emma-Jane (EJ) Bennett and Jordan Knight are life long best friends.  When EJ quits her job to work full time on her dating app, Dream Match, Jordan is happy for her but misses working with her.  As he realizes his feelings are more than friendship, will EJ come to the same conclusion?  Especially with the handsome and rich Eric Churchill turning her head…

My thoughts on this novel:

·       This is the second book in the Silver Teapot series.  I loved the first book in this series and can’t wait to see what happen next.  The next book, Not Very Sensible, comes out in October 2026.

·       Just like her inspiration, Jane Austen’s Emma, EJ frustrated me greatly at time with her decisions.  She was a very driven person which I related to.

·       Jordan was an honest guy, and he tries to get EJ to do better.  I like that he admits to his mistakes and asks for forgiveness.

·       I loved all the Austen references in this book.

·       This is a Christian and inspirational contemporary romance.

·       I enjoyed the Australia setting.

·       I liked the over arching theme of what is important in life?  Friends and Family?  Riches and knowing rich and famous people?

Overall, Not Precisely Mr. Knightley by Carolyn Miller was an entertaining contemporary romance with Jane Austen flair.  I enjoyed it.

Chase the Light by Suzanne Woods Fisher

If you could visit a national park this summer, which park would you chose?

Scout Johnson is a ranger at Acadia National Park.  She finds old papers behind a loose brick at a light house in the park.  The papers indicate that a previous lighthouse keeper purposely turned off his light to cause the sinking of a ship that was carrying gold.  The gold is now hidden around Acadia.  Will Scout and her friends be able to find it before the public finds out about the treasure?

My thoughts on this novel:

·       This was a fun light story with mystery and romance.  It was perfect reading during a stressful time!

·       This was a contemporary clean read.

·       Chase the Light is the second book in the National Parks Summers series.  I have not read the first book and this book worked fine as a standalone novel.

·       I really liked the character Wabanaki (Naki) Dana.  He is a Native American from the Penobscot Tribe.  He has the knowledge to decipher most of the clues and Scout finds herself attracted to him. Naki gave the story more depth.

·       There is a love triangle of sorts as Chase Fletcher is also on the team.  He has been on dates with Scout previously and is trying to use the news of the treasure to save his family’s newspaper.

·       There are many other characters including Scout’s flamboyant southern mother, two teenagers that tend to mess things up, etc.  They were all very entertaining.

·       There are great plot twists in the story.

·       I already wanted to visit Acadia National Park in Maine, and this book makes me want to visit even more.  There are beautiful descriptions of the park in the novel.

·       There were light faith elements in the novel.  It was inspirational.

Overall, Chase the Light by Suzanne Woods Fisher is a fun mystery, romance, contemporary adventure and a perfect summer read.

A Mother’s Love by Danielle Steel

Title:  A Mother’s Love

Author:  Danielle Steele

Narrated by:  Dan John Miller

Publisher: Recorded Books

Length: Approximately 7 hour and 28 minutes

Source: Purchased from Audible.com

What is the last book that disappointed you?

Bestselling author Hailey decides to spend her first Christmas alone in Paris.  Raising her twin daughters has consumed her life, but now her daughter Valerie is married, and her other daughter Olivia is going on a cruise with her sister and her new family for Christmas.  Hailey gets violently seasick and can’t go with them.  Haily has been single since her partner died years ago, but meeting Bart on the plane over, she considers that she might be open to a new relationship.

My thoughts on this novel:

·       This was the May pick for the Page-turners Book Club at the Kewaunee Public Library.

·       This was not a book club favorite.  Not much happens in this book at all. I read it all the way to the end waiting for the story to start.  There is a bit of action at the very end, but it was too little, too late.

·       It was hard to connect with the characters as they are living in a land of wealth that is so very different from my own life.

·       The title of the book did not go with the story.

·       The book was poorly written.  I haven’t read any Danielle Steel books since the 90’s.  Has she lost her touch?

Overall, A Mother’s Love by Danielle Steel did not connect with me.

Moonlight Murder by Uzma Jalaluddin

Title:  Moonlight Murder

Author:  Uzma Jalaluddin

Narrated by:  Deepti Gupta

Publisher: Harper Perennial

Length: Approximately 11 hours and 56 minutes

Source: Thank you, Partner @bibliolifestyle @harperperennial the review copy of the physical book.  Audiobook purchased from audible.

Where was the last book that you read set?  I just finished Moonlight Murder this morning and it was set in Toronto, Canada.

Kauser Khan has moved back to Toronto to be near her family.  She soon finds herself involved in investigating the mysterious death of Qasim, a young man who was dating her granddaughter, Maleeha.  This mystery also inspires Kauser to investigate the hit and run death of her son, Ali, eighteen years before.  Was it an accident or was there more involved for both mysteries?

My thoughts on this book:

·       Moonlight Murder is the second book in the Detective Aunty series.  I did feel a bit behind in the beginning, but I soon caught up. I would like to read the first book in this series.

·       This was a cozy mystery that was relaxing to read.

·       This was great on audiobook.  Narrator Deepti Gupta has great voices for all the characters.

·       Kauser was a great character.  I loved how she is really coming into herself at her stage in life.  She no longer will fade into the background and lets her thoughts be known.

·       I liked the glimpses into the Muslim Pakastani heritage world.

·       The grief of losing a child is a theme and part of the discussion.

·       Teenagers and bullying is also a theme.

·       I loved the female friendship between Kauser and her friend May.

·       There is a second chance for romance after being widowed for Kauser.

·       I enjoyed the family drama.

·       I really liked how the mystery was revealed, layer by layer with a few red herrings thrown in.  Kauser was great at talking to people, really listening to their stories, and putting together the puzzle pieces to solve the mystery.

·       I would recommend this book for those that love character driven mysteries such as The Thursday Murder Club.

·       There was a great ending for both mysteries – I did not guess how they would end.

·       There was also an awesome cliffhanger to set up the third book. I am ready to read it right now!

Overall, Moonlight Murder by Uzma Jalaluddin was very engaging and was a well-paced cozy mystery with great characters.

What country is your current book set in?

Yosoye is a lonely women, excited to be in Lagos for an architectural internship.  After a one-night stand, she finds herself pregnant.  As other pregnant women start being found drowned in the sea, Yosoye feel herself pressed by a fear that she will be next.  Does it have anything to do with the new development she is working on that is located on reclaimed land that is meant for the rich?

My thoughts on this audiobook:

·       The title comes from a saying, one leg on earth and one leg in heaven.

·       This is a literary novel that is also a women’s contemporary fiction novel.

·       It was a slow paced, but short novel.

·       It was interesting on audiobook.

·       The story explores the loneliness of motherhood.

·       I thought it was an interesting look at the parallels of growing a city as a designer and growing a new life within you as a mother.

·       I really enjoyed the setting in Legos.

·       The story never does resolve why the women were drowning.

Overall, One Leg on Earth by 'Pemi Aguda was an interesting literary fiction novel with a riveting setting in Lagos.

Murder Bimbo by Rebecca Novack

Title:  Murder Bimbo

Author:  Rebecca Novack

Narrated by:  Jennifer Pickens

Publisher: Simon & Schuster Audio

Length: Approximately 7 hours and 20 minutes

Source: Review Copy from Simon & Schuster Audio. Thank-you!

What is a book you’ve read lately that was out of your comfort zone?  Murder Bimbo is a thriller told through the eyes of a sex worker and is out of my typical comfort zone for reading.

Murder Bimbo is a 32-year-old sex worker, and she has just murdered a political extremist, Meat Neck.  She thought she was working under cover for the government, but things may not be what they appear to be.  She begins writing her story to Justice Bimbo who writes and produces a popular podcast series to get her story out and goes into hiding. Will she be able to save herself?

My thoughts on this audiobook:

·       This book was weird and funny.  It was just what I needed to capture my attention over a long drive on bad roads.

·       The book does try to explain away sex work as just another job, but the nature of the story shows the dangers, disadvantages, and abuse of sex workers.

·       It is told as a first-person narrative story through emails.  The narrative shifts and changes as she tells it. Murder Bimbo is an unreliable narrator that tells her own story with a humorous, snarky, light tone.

·       Trigger warning in that there is s@#ually explicit material and r#pe.

·       You think you know what is going on with the story, but then it is told differently to a different audience.  The first part are emails to Justice Bimbo where Murder Bimbo is an unwitting part in assassinating Meat Neck.  Part 2, she is emailing her lover what happened, and the story is a lot more complicated.  Part 3 she may be telling the true story of what has happened to the audience.

·       I was looking for a crazily entertaining novel and this book met the need!

·       The book was full of terrible people, but it was fun, which seems weird to say.

·       What is true?  How do we change our narratives depending on who we are telling our story to?

·       I liked it on audiobook and the narrator captured the tone perfectly.

Overall, Murder Bimbo by Rebecca Novack was a unique political thriller that captured my attention that explored the nature of storytelling and truth.

Sorry for Your Loss by Georgia McVeigh

What is a thriller novel, show, or movie that you have enjoyed lately?

Iris has recently lost her fiancé and has joined a local grief group to work through her loss.  While there, she meets the very handsome Jack who has recently lost his wife to cancer.  As Iris plots ways to win Jack’s affections, she discovers things are not what they seem.  What is real and what is deception in Iris and Jack’s world?

My thoughts on this novel:

·       This is a contemporary psychological thriller.

·       It’s hard to write a review for this one as I don’t want to give anything away.  It’s best to go in not knowing much about the story.

·       There were many twists and turns in this one, some I figured out, and some where a surprise.

·       The story alternates between the present and the past.  Iris lost her twin sister, Marcie, growing up and it details their relationship and Marcie’s fate.

·       The story is set in London.

·       Iris is not a very likeable person, but I was intrigued to see what she would do next.  I also felt sorry for the losses that she had in life.

·       The novel was very action packed at the end and I couldn’t put it down.

·       The story is told as Iris’s inner monologue.

·       I can’t believe this is a debut novel.  I’m interested to see what Georgia McVeigh writes next.

·       The ending did leave me wondering what could happen next.

Overall, Sorry for Your Loss by Georgia McVeigh was an intriguing contemporary psychological thriller.
