Which Bennet sister from Pride and Prejudice do you think deserves their own story? I was pleased to discover this series of mysteries starting Mary Bennet, the very overlooked middle Bennet sister.
Mr. Bennet has passed, and Mr. Collins has started
taking over the home before Mr. Bennet has even been buried. Mary notices some strange happenings around
Longbourn during this confusion. The
future looks bleak for Mary, but she is invited by a previously unknown
relative, Lady Trafford from Castle Durrington, to stay with her and train to
become a governess. Mary goes and
discovers many a mysterious happenings including a murder. As she makes many a
social mistake, Mary also starts to realize that she has more to offer than
previously thought. Does she have the
makings of a spy?
I loved how this novel took what were pointed out as
Mary’s flaws and used them in a positive way.
Mary also did correct some of her real flaws, including thinking about
how what she says could wound others with her words. I also liked the mystery and finding out that
Mary had read a Gothic novel in the past and not just sermons. I read this book quickly and was ready for
Book #2.
The Secret Life of Miss Mary Bennet is a good sequel
to Pride and Prejudice and is also a good mystery. I thought that author Katherine Cowley did a
great job of writing the original characters from Pride and Prejudice and
keeping them in character. I also loved
the new characters. I am currently
reading and enjoying the second book in this series!
